21 y/o first time mom 7 months post op

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I am only 5+1 weeks pregnant, but I would love to get information from other women who have been where I am.

I am extremely nervous about gaining a lot of weight, it doesn't help that I feel like I am eating too much. Just 2 weeks ago I was only about to eat barely one slice of homemade pizza, last week I ate 3! 1/3 of a chicken breast, to 1.5 breasts.

Thanks,

Kelsey

It's interesting. It's been a while since I was pregnant but the nutritional needs are only something like 300 calories more per day, later in the pregnancy. It sounds like you might be having some head hunger. Not that it isn't real…but I remember not *needing* to eat very much more but sometimes thinking I did.

I am not a doctor but I would find one who has experience with pregnancy post WLS, and I would measure everything like crazy! The one question of course is, if you were only able to eat around 800 calories or so before, what would be your minimum to thrive in the pregnancy.

Good luck!

I am not using a doctor/ob, I am in the process of trying to find a midwife.

As for the head hunger, I had a lot of that at the end of the summer. My belly growls, out of hunger. If I go too long I get nauseous. I saw my pcp but I recently got married and moved over 1.5 hours away.

Keep some cheese cubes or slices in the fridge and a healthy trail mix in your purse... nibble on it to ward off nausea... you don't need extra calories until about 15 weeks at which time you will only need 300 extra calories per day for the duration of your pregnancy. That looks like half a Peanut Butter and jelly sandwich (just to give you an image) I studied nutrition in college and took an interest in pregnancy nutrition also I am currently 18weeks... If you let your head tell you that you have to eat more you might gain weight. I am 18 weeks and still loosing and my OB is not concerned. You might not be able to see a midwife because of the surgery but good luck there are a lot of things that have to be done differently. This is my 3rd pregnancy and it is being handled very differently :-)

This is helpful. I am 7 months post op and I just found out that I am pregnant. I plan to keep following my diet because I don't want to gain a lot. My first pregnancy I only gained 18lbs. Thanks @mamachef

Wow, I really feel out of place here, but, I can tell you I have seen this play out in other threads a while back. And yes, I do recall in the threads I have read, the sleeve does seem to relax significantly while you are pregnant. However, it was also reported that after giving birth the stomach did return to its pre pregnancy restrictive proportions.

I'm sure if you do a bit of digging you can find the threads, but they were 18 months or more ago.

If you're not using a Dr. or OB, do you have access to a nutritionist? It might be worth having a session with one just to help with find the right intake to keep your weight under control and your little one healthy.

Best of luck!

OTR...!! Btw...omigosh, you look FAB!

& yeah, I was going to say the same thing... Didn't there used to be a separate forum/room for this topic?! :( Am I missing it, or did it disappear with the transition?

I also remember ppl saying their sleeve relaxed a bit during p/g....

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
