MississippiQueen, I apologise if my post read as condescending. That was not my intention, I was trying to share part of my own journey which was very much about learning to change my mind about things. To do this I had to often go far away from the emotional and into the facts, hence the dictionary reference. But on reread I can see how in your current space this could be viewed as lecturing. Please be assured that my intention was far from lecturing and my words come from my own experiences with failure and poor choices along the journey I have been on.

MQ, if this is any consolation to you, I'm struggling with some "cheating" issues too. I saw my NUT today and she told me that I can't have caffeine 3 months post-surgery and it's also not allowed when I do my 2 week pre-op diet. OK, it's all about hydration...I can see why you shouldn't have caffeine post-surgery but WTF is wrong with it during the pre-op diet?!? Why is hydration such an issue then? It's not like I won't be able to drink extra Fluid to compensate--my stomach hasn't been sleeved yet.

Anyhoo, I think it's a stupid rule, but I will comply with the program because, frankly, I'm scared not to. I will bring it up with my surgeon when I see her in a couple of weeks but I know what her answer will be. I really should just suck it up and deal with it, right? :)

My program hates caffeine, saying it's a gastric irritant. I do break this one rule, I admit it, but please consider closely before bending or breaking any of your program's guidelines.

I didn't post to scold or make you feel bad about "cheating". I want you to be safe. Everyone should be aware there is far worse at stake than not losing weight. Following directions in the beginning is so important, doing otherwise is gambling with your health. However, it's your risk to take.

Like Arts says, is really easy to eat simple carbs. Sometimes I feel like the Protein hasn't really hit the spot! I'm full, but I'm still hungry. So I started having a couple of crackers at bed time. Then I started putting butter on my 2 crackers. Last night I had 4 crackers with butter. Got up this morning and threw the crackers away! Too dangerous to have them in the house!!!

crackers, Cookies, cake, pudding, fruit juice, bread... I am a junkie (both in my head but also in my body), simple carbs just do me wrong, I tell ya!

At 6 weeks out now and able to start transitioning most foods back into my diet, the interesting thing to me is that not being able/allowed to eat stuff was really a helpful crutch for me. Now is when the real work starts! I was at a party just last night and I had to survey the offerings really thoroughly before I made my choices. In the middle of this I had the flash: wow, if I can eat a lamb meatball, I am sure I can eat a cracker…it won't hurt anything if I let it "melt" in my mouth. And I had to smack myself upside the head (figuratively!) and say, "No. It will hurt you. It will hurt your progress. Protein only." (Thank goodness this was a "paleo" focused party. Lots of Protein choices.) Like Arts says though, because I haven't had simple carbs, I don't really crave them, so I don't have that uphill/downhill battle to fight.

The last 6 weeks have been good training for portion size, counting, and all of the framework kind of habits. But when the choices are arrayed before you in all their dazzling glory? That's when the s*&t gets real.

For me, anyway.

I just started reading the book, "Emotional First Aid Kit - A Practical Guide to Life after Bariatric Surgery" by Cynthia Alexander. I'm only on chapter 3, but so far has been a pretty good read to help me wrap my head around what I'm getting myself into. She stresses very hard that the surgery is actually the easy part. We have to come to grips with the emotional and social aspects of our eating habits and make changes for a healthier lifestyle. The surgery should be the last step in the entire process...not the first. The mental part is much harder than the physical part.

Since I am self-pay, I've missed out on the psych eval and therapy sessions a lot of insurance companies require. This book is providing a lot of insight into the mental and emotional struggles that I will be going through and I hope this will help with my ability to succeed. So if you are looking to "cheat" (gain an advantage to success), might I suggest getting this book.

Speaking of "cheating", :-( I have been so bad today. I dot know what got into me. I was out with some friends who don't know that I had the surgery, and went to a French bakery. I tried to be good and order some duck, but it was bad, I returned it, and they suggested I just play it safe, and get a sandwich. I didn't even hesitate... I ordered a "croque Monsieur" which is a sandwich, most of the time made with baguette and Swiss cheese, and ham. Sometimes with a bechamel on top. I ate 4 regular bites of it. Then they gave free mimosas, and I had 3 to 4 sips :-/

And we all went to menchies to get frozen yogurt, and I didn't buy any, but I literally had a little tasting cup of each flavor. I feel very bad about all this; especially the French baguette. I need to get back on track NOW. Being a carb addict, it just triggered something and I want more. And the worst part is that It was not uncomfortable at all. I was absolutely fine. Isn't that unusual for being only 2 months post op? *sigh*

Well, I'm gonna go have a Protein Shake now, and try to forget today ever happened....

Mine was on Nov 19th. I had nothing by mouth day of surgery, not even an ice chip. I didn't want it. The next day I was dying of thirst and that's all I wanted. Even now, I don't want that much. I'm just not hungry, I force myself to eat. I'm on pureed/mushy. I can eat 1 tbls of uncooked grits( 1/3 of a serving), half a scrambled egg and Im full. Today I had a 3/4 of a kids Soup at Panera and I was full. I had 3 shrimp the other night and those made me burp. I'm now staying away from food that makes me feel like crap. There is a protocol for a reason, your stomach needs to heal. Its so hard for me to believe that I am truly not hungry, but I know it will come back one day soon.

oh no not me! I wouldn't dare cheat in the beginning. I had surgery on nov 18. first week was Clear liquids, 2nd week was full liquids. That week was thanksgiving and I had a Protein shake for thanksgiving lunch. I went to my dad's house that dad and purposely showed up after everyone was done eating. Worked out great. I wasn't hungry anyway so it wasn't a big deal. This week is purees. So now its cottage cheese and chicken salad. Still not hungry. Just eating cuz i have too.

5wks out today and after wk 4 I was told by my dr I could eat anything I want as long as it is mush before I swallow. To wait til 7wks out before I try lettuce and salads. Every dr has their own plan and each is different. I was on cream Soup day after surgery. Soft foods after 9 days.

Goalie,

Please do NOT forget. We all have learing experiences. This is one of yours. You own it and I KNOW will learn how to plan for the future from it.

Remember this DID not make you "fail". You can only fail if you quit!

(hugs)

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
