Diet Before Approval & Pre Op Diet?

Recommended Posts

I'm in the process of approval for VSG. I've had Nut & Physc eval. I have my endoscopy on Wed then it's off to the ins for approval!! I'm just curious I've been alllll over this site and haven't seen where anyone has had to start a diet while still in the process.... I've seen ins mandatory diets. But nothing like mine. My Nut put me on an 1100 cals a day diet until 2weeks pre op then it's the standard 10 day liquid. Is anyone else doing this? Thanks

Hello Clinton6,

It has been several years since I had my bypass, but as I look back at what I experienced then and what I know now,I wish that I had done things different. First I would try to get some type of education about what I personally needed to do before I had my surgery. If you surgeon is placing you on a 1100 cal. diet, he may have several reasons for doing it. Psychlogical and emotional after effects are going to happen; food and your tolerance for some foods will be something you will need to experiment with as you try to adjust after your surgery, you will find that even thought you loved certain types of foods, after the surgery you won't. Believe me when I say this, as I found that certain types of foods; milk and milk produts, some meats, especially with an excess of fat, raw vegitable, sweets, soda pop or any carbonated drink plus other foods will make you very sick, especially if you try to eat over the small amount that your new stomach will hold. You will become very nausious, purging can be very painful with you feeling like your going to throw up you whole stomach, at least what is left of it. It will take several minute to several hours before you start feeling like you will live. You are sweating and feeling light headed and you will need to lye down until you start feeling better. They don't explain to you enough of the things you may experience after your surgery. I would check with your physician and the facility where your surgery will be preformed and inguire about any pre-surgery classes or seminars that you can attend. I wish that there was some of these type of support bases when I had my surgery;it would have made things alot better afterwards. Best of luck with your surgery, and be sure to follow your surgeons directions, If you don't understand why he is asking you to do these things. then ask him! It's your body and your future that will be affected. Most physicians and surgeons would be more than eager to explain why they ask you to do certain things before your surgery.

Before getting approval for the sleeve with Aetna I had to have 6 mos worth of dr visits with the drs notes and a 1200 cal diet plan tried. When all that was done the ins also asked for 3 years previous dr weight checks for me. Luckily my dr office had them and I was approved within a week. This is in addition to the psych eval and nutritionist appt.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
