Returning Back To Work

Recommended Posts

Returning back to work after gastric sleeve -

My dr says 4-6 weeks before going back to work.

It seems like a long time! I don't think I can afford to stay out of work more than 2-3 weeks.

Financially it will not be possible.

I was just wondering how long most people stay out of work and are feeling up to working a full day

I stayed out for 10 days. I went back and felt fine. I sure your time off will depend on what type of work you do. I have an office job.

I work as a dental hygienist in a very busy dental office. I'm on my feel a lot and busy with patients all day. Most of my days are until either 6 pm with one day a 12 hour day.

I'm hoping I can go back within 2 weeks .

I know I'm probably going to be tired and sore.

Anyone else have an advice for me?

You won't need a return to work authorization unless your workplace requires it (very typical if you are on short term disability).

My employer Wyers a back to work authorization from the doctor unfortunately

Hopefully I can convince my doctor I am well enough to go back after three weeks

I should probably look into getting short-term disability benefits just in case has anyone had to do this?

What kind of work do you do?

If it's a desk job with not much bending and lifting maybe they will release to to work after 4,

I work as a hygienist in a very busy dental office.

I'm up and down off of my chair very often, running around the office, lots of bending to clean etc.

I have to somehow convince my dr to allow me to work sooner than 6 weeks!

I won't be able to pay my rent or bills etc.

I live pay to pay, but need this surgery to be healthier.

Yes...I work a desk job so I pretty much just sit down all day. I like you live paycheck to paycheck so it's going to be tough..my situation is unique...im having my ovaries taken out 12/13/13 by my obgyn, will be out 4 weeks for that then I'm having my gastric sleeve surgery on 1/13/14 so on my day of surgery I would have already been out of work 4 weeks so all I can suffer through is 4 more to make sure I dont go under..I will get short term disability while out but it's not 100% of pay. I am just scared. But I know my surgery will be such a positive change in my life I MUST push through and take care of ME! sidenote: grocery bill will be low for a while I have to do 2 week preop liquid and 4 week post op liquid then 4 week soft/mushie diet. So that's 10 weeks of little of nothing! Best of luck

I took one week vacation. Had my VSG on a Friday so with both weekends off I went back to work on post op day 10. Had no problems at all other than needing a little nap when I got home. I'm a nurse so I do have a physical job...just made sure I had people to help me do the heavy lifting.

Thanks for your info on your experience

Very helpful

My only issue is my dr told me 6 weeks post op at home! My employer wanted a drs note of why I would be missing work

In the letter they put 6 weeks recovery

Now my employer says I need a medical release from my dr stating I'm ok to return to work

Now I just have to convince my dr to allow me to work.

In 10 days I have my pre op visit with him

I'll have to see what he says

Thanks!

Lisa

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
