Advice Please

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! I'm 21 years old from Canada and I have been looking into having RNY gastric bypass surgery in April and I'm currently going through the social worker and nutritionist. Here in Canada we have to go through a few process before the doctor lets us go through the surgery. I have been thinking about the long the effects this surgery will provide (good and bad) my mother supporters me but my dad doesn't want me to do it. I am currently 260 lbs height of 5'6. Any advice? I also have PCOS which makes it very difficult to loose weight and a long family history of diabetes so I'm afraid. Any one have advice about not all family members agreeing with the surgery? I'm also scared to tell my friends because I don't think they would understand

Of course the decision is going to have to be yours. I work with a girl who was about your age when she had bypass, two years ago. She said she weighed a little over 300 lbs. and about 5' 4" tall. She is now at 218 lbs. But if diabetes runs in your family considering a long term WLS might be the best. Diabetes, even under good control, still damages the body's organs. So if there is some way to stop it before it starts, if it will, then I would go for it. Whether family members agree with you or not, you have to do what would be best for you. Myself I would rather out live the family members then die an early death due to health issues caused by being overweight. Just my thoughts. Also when you talk with the surgeon, definitely voice concerns that you might have.

I'm 26, Canadian, pcos, 5'6, And 280. I know what you're going through, i've battled this since puberty, and it's not easy at all. When I first told my family and they reacted the same as yours. I told him this was a tool, and not an escape plan. Told them all about all the research, that I understand the positive and the negatives, and how it affected me emotionally, physically and with my self-esteem. After a while they seem to agree with me as long as I had all the facts understood. Keep your chin up :)

Oh cool your are Canadian too! So you had to go through all the steps I am currently doing. I completed the orientation in October and I have 2 appointments in December, I hope I can get the surgery done in April that's my goal! How has your journey been so far Amanda?

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
