Why The Sleeve Over Bypass

Recommended Posts

I am undecided on the sleeve or bypass. I meet with the Surgeon on the 25th of November to discuss options.

I would like to hear some feedback on why some of you chose the sleeve.

Thank you in advance.

My biggest deciding factor wad that I couldn't get past the thought of them rearranging my organs. Totally mental but enough so that I went sleeve. I'm not sure why removing most of my stomach wasn't so scary to me but your mind does odd things sometimes.

I chose sleeve because of more likely to not have dumping syndrome. Also, it just seemed 'right' when I read about the sleeve. Also I have some friends that had bypass and they throw up a lot.

I chose the sleeve b/c

I'm anemic and my surgeon said w/ the bypass...the part of my stomach that absorbs Iron would be bypassed and that could be dangerous for me.

Also an endoscopy can't be done on the "unused" part of the stomach...so if cancer is growing in it...the only way to tell is via pet/ct. The issue w/ that is it's done once/ year. So if I do one in dec and cancer starts in January by next dec I'll be dead. This was a concern for me b/c my great g-am had stomach cancer.

Plus the thought of thought of my plumbing being rearranged didn't sit well with me.

I think anyone considering weight loss surgery needs to chose based on his/her own medical history/ goals/ fears. Whatever you go with can work for you if you work for it.

I opted for the sleeve because I didn't want to worry about malabsorption of nutrients. My mom had RNY and she doesn't absorb Vitamins. She also eats such a tiny amount, and I thought it would be an easier switch in my position if I could eat a little more normal than an RNYer. My surgeon suggested from the beginning that I get the sleeve, and I figured he knows best lol

I hope you find your answer :)

I got the sleeve because it has way les risk factors, over time there are none, they don't re arrange thing, and it's a good place to start! Your also pretty normal, just a smaller stomach! Rny was just to risky for me.

I chose the sleeve because I have seizure disorder and Migraines and also a complicated surgical history with severe adhesions. So number one I need to be able to absorb my medicine and number two my intestines are already scarred . Everyone's case is different.

I am choosing the sleeve because I wasn't crazy about all the anastomosis and malabsorption. I think it's an individual choice, do whats best for you.

Best wishes!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
