1 Week Post-Op Energy Level?

Recommended Posts

For those of you fortunate to already be post-op, how were you feeling 1 week post-op as far as pain and energy level? I'm having surgery a week before thanksgiving, and my husbands parents and grandmother are driving 8 hours to spend the weekend with us. They've offered to take my husband out to a restaurant for thanksgiving, but I'm considering making a few dishes the day before (with hubby's help) so they can just reheat and then leave just the turkey & stuffing for my father in law to cook thanksgiving day (his normal holiday duties). We're not talking anything too fancy here - I envision myself mainly doing chopping, peeling and pulling ingredients from cupboards and coaching my husband through the rest of it. Am I taking on too much or do you think I'll be alright?

You will barely having liquids at this point, cleared too..but not feeling like eating or drinking. Hence, exhaustion. Even if you feel good in the morning to start a few things you get tired soo easily. Its 1 Thanksgiving I vote for giving yourself a break.

I had surgery last year a week before thanksgiving... I cook every year, but in all honesty? I just couldn't last year. My husband and the kids went to my inlaws house while I got some much needed rest..

I would say let them cook and of you feel up to it

You could possibly help here and there :)

rivergirl

you will see/hear on the board the common phrase..............

"the one thing we all have in common is that we are all different"!!!!!

some people are up and around and feeling great almost immediately!!!

surgery on Friday, work on Monday :o

all went fine with my surgery/recovery, but..............

i was not ready to do jumping jacks in a week - nor would i want to cook a big meal!!!!

i know you are very important - but they can "try" and do for themselves ;)

and as "they" say..............

"let em eat cake" !!!!! LOL

good wishes with surgery

speedy recovery

kathy

Thanks for the responses! I just found out that a local grocery store will do the entire meal - 12-14# turkey, gravy, rolls & 3 sides for $90.00. I think that may be the answer :)

The first week post op is definitely the most uncomfortable. Energy levels are variable at best, pain may not quite be controlled until the end of the first week and you may not be sleeping well since you may be in pain and unable to sleep in the positions you are used to. I was also quite preoccupied with getting in all my fluids and Protein (which I never have despite how I try). I would find myself getting worn out doing absolutely nothing differently than the day before but remember your body is using a lot of energy to heal. I would certainly plan on someone else doing the cooking and cleaning. I'm almost three weeks post op and still don't have the energy level I would like even though the weight loss has been great and my doc says I'm doing better than average all around. Hope everything goes well!

Good plan on the store doing it. I'm 5 days post op, and if I try to do too much.. I pay for it. Plus, the internal stitch in my right side hasn't released yet, so I'm still in serious pain.

I am 1 week out today, and I feel pretty good. I feel I could do pretty much anything I could before. The thing is, you just don't know until you personally experience it. Give yourself more than enough time to recover, and take all the help offered to you.

I am 1 week post op today and there is no way I could prepare a meal. I feel good, but it takes only a little exertion and I am wiped out. When I scheduled my surgery 3 weeks before Thanksgiving , I called my kids and told them I wasn't cooking this year. They were perfectly fine with it and we are already planning our Christmas meal to be band friendly. Holidays doesn't have to be the traditional foods, the time we spend with family is what makes the holiday!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
