gastric band to RNY revision

Recommended Posts

Hello im new here and have a few questions. I am currently on my 3rd day of my pre OP diet. My surgery date is October 29th. I was wondering how long the surgery takes? (They will also be fixing my hiatal hernia) how long is the average Hospital stay? What you couldn't live without in the Hospital? And last if all what was the post OP pain like once you got home? Thank you and good luck to everyone. Hw: 320 lowest weight after band: 275 current weight: 279

Hi Pattycakes 209. We are having surgery the same day! I feel like its really getting close and I have told a couple of people at work that I'm doing this. They are so supportive! One has had the Rny, I've been asking her a lot of things.....I'm suppose to stay 2.5 days. No pre-op diet (WOW). Taking a good book, pillow and blanky.... chapstick and phone for music...probably wont use it, but just in case. I pray I don't have too much pain..

This may sound dumb, but it might depend upon your pain tolerance. Some people have a lot of pain, some don't. When I had my band removed in May, I didn't even fill the prescription for pain medication and gave it back to the surgeon on my follow. So when I visited him the week before my RNY surgery, he asked if there were any concerns. I said yes, I'm worried about the pain after surgery (I remembered I was in a lot of pain right after surgery when I had the band put in). The surgeon looked at me and smiled and I quote "that is what pain medication is for". But actually, I was wide awake once I got to my room. Had a pain pump, but the only time I administered any pain medication was every two hours. That is when the nurses would come in, take vitals, blood sugars, check the cath., check the drain. Plus with pain meds I usually sleep for about two hours, so I was using it more for a sleep aid. My take home pain meds prescription I filled and took half of the bottle and quit. Surgery was on a Wednesday 9/11/13 and I actually drove to the vet with my dog and then went grocery shopping the following Monday. I actually could have gone back to work then, but my supervisor was unhappy when I had the band out, as she thought I returned too soon. So I actually took off two weeks. I will suggest that as soon as you can get up and walk, do it. I found I had less pain upright than lying in the bed. In less than 24 hours I was up moving all around. But we are all different, to me the surgery wasn't bad at all and haven't had a problem yet.

I had my band to bypass surgery on Tuesday. I only spent one night in the hospital. I had a pain pump and slept most of the time. I did walk as soon as they got me settled in my room. The only things I used were my own pillow, Chapstick, toothbrush, toothpaste and a hairbrush. I brought books and my iPad and never used them. I did watch tv a little. For me , this has been an easier recovery so far then when I had the band put in 6 years ago. Good luck and walk as soon as you can!

That's nice Harley, I will be getting the two step procedure. It may take that long to take out the band but I hope not. I can wait a couple of months for my tummy to heal. Good Luck!

Hi,

I had lapband removal, hiatal hernia repair and bypass. Surgery lasted 3 hours. Majority of the time was spent on the hernia. It was big.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
