So the last week in September I spoke to my Doctor about weight loss surgery/gastric sleeve, after doing months of research on it. This surgery just seems to make more sense to me. Of course like many of us I have always struggled with my weight my entire life. I have had ok years and I have had bad years. Due to stress and a bad break up I reached 280lb at 5'6. Since my highest weight I have been able to lose 20 of that. Although I am still over weight and unhappy speaking to my Doctor put me more at ease. She was able to understand my issues and weight struggle. Due to my insurance, 6 months of follow ups, surgery weight loss classes, and food tracking with the nutritionist is mandatory. I may seem compulsive but I am absolutely doing the count down as we speak. March will be my 6th month of follow ups and visits I am required to complete. I can not wait and I am getting even more antsy by the day! Ughhhhh dunno what to do with myself!!!!! #suggestions anyone

I am sorry you have to wait. It was a no brainer for me. My insurance would not even consider weight loss surgery. I am a self pay. I am glad you are on your way to surgery and the wait can be horrendous. I am so sorry. This will be the best decision you have ever made. I wish I had done this years ago. I have been overweight for over 42 years. I did this for my health. Too bad I waited this long. But just think!!!! You get a do over! How many people get to start over? You, that is who!

I know exactly how you feel, I am nervous and excited all at the time. I am 230lbs 5'4..no health issues except for hypothyroidism , severe joint knee and heel pain. On meds for the pain. Working 12hrs shift don't help either. Looking forward to the surgery sometime April/May 2014 if all goes well with insurance. which I know they cover WLS according to my policy. Keeping fingers crossed wish I could fast forward time.

Actually, waiting is as bad as it gets. The rest is gravy!

I was just going to fly to Mexico and get the surgery, however when I realized that my insurance would cover it and educate me over the course if 6 months I decided to go with that. Plus meeting with the surgeon he was very nice and informative. He answered every question I had they even test the stomach portion that they are removing for cancer. I am very excited about this and can't wait.

Same here if insurance don't approve procedure I plan on going to Mexico, don't really want to , but I will. I have to get this weight off. tired of living with joint pain. I am working 2 jobs to save incase insurance denies me.

Now think about Mexico....what if you have complications after surgery....maybe you would have trouble finding someone in your area at home to fix what is wrong. Something to think about. Complications.

There are a lot of positive things about going to Mexico for your surgery if you are a self pay. I'm scheduled for February 2014 and looking forward to it. Then I will go back to the bariatric program at my local hospital for follow up care. Complications can happen anywhere you have surgery...

So true. I have a girlfriend that went to Mexico, so did her mother and brother with wonderful results. I just chose not to. Mexico leaves me with horrible concerns.

I was a little concerned at first but to be honest I have the same concerns having surgery here... Who actually likes to go under the knife?! Doesn't matter if I'm near home or not! But I talked with my doctor and it's not the first time he heard of partients going there. He said a center of excellence is recognized internationally which is very high quality, just as good if not better than some of the places in US. Also I've heard patients get treated very well and had not one complaint with the nurses at the place I'm going...which is more than I can say of some of the overworked, underpaid, exhausted and not patient-friendly nurses at the hospitals near me! Plus...it's Mexico- automatic vacation for me ;)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
