Help.... post op question

Recommended Posts

I'm so sorry this is going to sound gross but I had surgery Thursday 10/24 today is Monday and I have watery diarrhea every since saturday night. I have no fever but sometimes fell flushed. I can walk around and I can drink Water and Protein Shakes (started those today) without problem. The only concern was the watery bm.

Anyone else go through this if so how long did it last

I only had 8 ounces of milk today and I have had Water and juice on Friday Saturday and Sunday and this started Saturday night. Would lactose intolerance effect me over weekend when I didn't have milk?

I had this until I started more solid food -- I think it was pureed food. Just gotta think -- liquid in, liquid out. My NUT had said if it persisted that it could be lactose intolerance or an intolerance to the artificial sweeteners in shakes. She said it was ok to take immodium -- but I'm not recommending it because I think you should consult with your own surgeon and/or nutritionist. Above all -- stay hydrated.

Why don't you try lactaid pills? I've been taking them for years and the really help.

No if you're lactose intolerant it hits within minutes.

I will look that pill up and ask my doc if and when I can take it. Right now this sucks .... I can't even leave the house because I have 2 seconds to run to potty :(

I'm glad I'm not the only one... I mean I don't wish this on anyone but I'm glad I'm don't alone...

Had it for almost a month ?! Not uncommon when all you're taking in are liquids. Just keep yourself hydrated.

Gather close young grasshopper and I will tell you the 1st secret of WLS. "Never trust a fart!" :-P

The diarrhea stage is one I think we all go through, since you're basically living on liquids for several weeks.

It does clear up, but for about the 1st 3 months, I could never trust a fart. After that, I went through the Constipation phase and I had to learn go get in enough Fiber. And experienced the oh so lovely taste of Milk of Magnesia! At about 9 months my new stomach adjusted and I'm back to normal.

Just being honest this happened to me and I felt good then BAM so sick. Turns out I caught CDiff If you don't know what it is please Google it. I never heard of it until it literally not kidding almost killed me. Please be careful it doesn't hurt to get checked. I thought it was my IBS acting up turns out that's now gone it was CDiff! All the best but please be careful with this.

Diarrhea was the only symptom no fever but once it got bad I did have abdominal pain. The diarrhea started like 4 days after I got home. For awhile I just kept going to the bathroom but I was still drinking my fluids fine but eventually that all stopped. The doctors can check with a simple Stoll sample the earlier the better unfortunately for my I spent 5 days in the hospital. Believe me I'm not trying to freak you out but the disease is serious so must share. The surgery wasn't the problem but since they pump you with all those antibiotics after surgery your body can't fight infections because you have no more bad bacteria. They should always give a probiotic with the antibiotics. Where you giving those?

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
