Moving on from walking

Recommended Posts

I'm about two weeks out from my surgery and am up to walking 5 miles around the neighborhood at one time. How long after surgery did folks wait to start doing something like elliptical? I have my follow up on Tuesday and will ask then but am curious as to what everyone else did/was told.

I was told 6 weeks before doing core exercises.

I got on the elliptical 7 days post-op. My doc cleared me, but instructed me to hold the rails so I didn't engage my core too much and of course, to stop if I feel any pain. I was just fine and I've been grooving ever since!

I'm 2.5 weeks out and just went to the gym this morning actually and did the elliptical for 45 minutes :) I was walking 5 miles a day too! At my post-op check in my surgeon told me I can do whatever cardio just still no lifting over 10 lbs till I'm at 4 weeks

My surgeon held me to just walking for 8 weeks, but then I was cleared for all exercise.

My surgeon's plan was 6 weeks before any working out beside walking, although when I met with her during my 4th week, she released me because I wasn't having issues like pain, etc. I'm still too chicken to get on my treadmill because I'm a clutz and will be the one who crashes to the ground and messes things up internally! So I'm doing Wii Fit, and staying (relatively) safe on my own two feet.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
