Anyone regret WLS and why?

Recommended Posts

Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences and honesty about WLS!

My thoughts and positive energy going out to those not felting well or dealing with complications. Things can only get better!

I'm on my pre-op diet day 2 and it's not as easy as I thought, mentally I felt prepared and then when my husband cooked for the family and I saw a beef roast, I cheated and had a small piece. Back on the liquid diet for remainder of night and will continue to do so during the week

I truly feel being on a diet is much easier when at work or away from home.

Everyone keep up the success WL journey, you're all truly inspiring and motivating to hear all you has to go through and are still going through!!

Positive energy going you ways!!

Thank you all again!! : )

I just confirmed my surgery for 11/15/13 I'm suddenly nervous. I'm type 2 diabetic and wondering if my liquid diet (start 11/1) is going to help my sugar levels stay normal.

It's good to hear the truth and what works and what doesn't and ideas to keep pre-op diet going and for pos-op as well

I keep wondering if or anyone regrets having the WLS after thinking they were 100% ready.

Please share the good' date=' bad and ugly.

Thank you for sharing.[/quote']

I developed Atrial fibulation after surgery. The docs are controling it with meds right now.

I have another surgery for A thing they discovered during my Pre-op testing next week.

Mid December they will shock my heart to try to get me out of A-fib.

If it works... Great.

If not .... I live with a 1% greater chance of stroke.

But, being 100 pounds lighter ( my goal) has GOT TO BE healthier for my heart, than being heavy.

Trade offs.

No regrets.

I have to say right before my surgery I was feeling like I was making the biggest mistake as I am 26, actually 27 today, and still have my whole life ahead of me. I'm now 2 weeks out and I haven't been hungry, haven't been miserable, I can still drink liquids without an issue, and I realize that in a few short weeks I can eat anything I want , just in less amounts. What's better than that?

I cudnt wait to respond to this thread! I am 28yrs old. I had high blood pressure and was on meds at 25yrs old. I cudnt walk up the stairs without getting out of breath. I cudnt tie my shoe or paint my toenails without a struggle' date=' the only regret I have is waiting 2 years to get the surgery. I have a co-worker that informed me that our insurance pays for this surgery. So I sat back and watched as him and his wife got this surgery and between the 2 of them they lost the weight of 3 people. And I STILL didnt get it. I have 3 boys and I cudnt dance with them I cudnt run or race with them I cudnt ride bikes with them or play basketball with them. I cudnt wrestle with them. Now these are all things that I did wit them this summer. I cant believe the difference that weight made in my life. I run the stairs I jog I wotk out everyday I dont sweat I dont run out of breath like I use to. I played baseball and basketball with my boys this summer we rode bikes we dance all the time! My youngest son (7) can wrap his arms completely around my waist now. I can fit my oldest sons jackets coats and shirts. (Hes 10) im now known as skinnny tiffany instead of the heavey set tiffany lol yes I laugh at it now. My co-workers didnt recognize me, people I have known for years dont recognize me now. And I soak uo every bit of it cuz I deserve it. People think its easy to have this surgery but I wish I cud show them exactly how hard it is. My hubby tells me all the time he admires my strength cuz he cudnt have did the pre-op diet let alone the 2mth long post-op. Even now I don't eat the things I use to. Dont get me wrong im far from perfect but compared to what I ate before...I eat like a bird seriously lol my hubby at the timed weighed 260lbs I was right behind him at 240lbs and I am 5'1 now I am 137lbs and you ask wud I do it again and my answer is in a heartbeat. Do I regret it? My answer is not at all!! I regret not having this done at 24!! Its cheaper on the household its convenient when your to busy to cook its normal! Im now 14mths out I can eat a normal size meal that wudnt look weird to someone that doesnt know ive had this surgery (for those of you who want to keep it a secret) im no longet on bp meds ...I wear a size 6....I cud go on and on about the good things this surgery has brought to me. No I didnt have any complications my surgeon was amazing and I healed wonderful. But if the outcome was the same I wud go thru complications becuz its worth it

This sounds so much like me. I am so sick of not being able to play with my kids and live my life! The only time I have really regretted my sleeve was when I first got home from the hospital. I layed down on the sofa and couldn't get up. It was too painful to even try. I did eventually get up, with some help, and I haven't regretted it since.

Easy answer: I do not regret it.

had an easy time of it for the most part......but it's work.......when you eat such a small amount of food (well, for me anyway), you have to eat with intention and decide where are you going to get the best bang for your buck when it comes to protein/nutrtion.

Those first month or two are difficult.....it's a struggle to get in your Water and Protein....can be painful even....but every day it got better until I was healed, and it's been mostly smooth sailing.

It's not the easy way out, and whatever struggles you have with food issues or head hunger, you will still have to work on them post op.................BUT this gives you a helping hand.......and for me, it gives me hope. Hope that I will reach my goal weight....

Thank you for sharing.

I was sleeved 5 weeks ago. I am down nearly 60 pounds since Jan 1, 2013.

I feel GREAT. I was so excited I didn't sleep for 3 nights before surgery.

I am so glad I did it. I have tried and failed to lose weight over the last 30 years.

My current weight 227 is. A dream come true. I got here so easily, I am lowering my gol to 185#. Another dream, that I know I can reach.

I do not know much about diabetes, but, a diabetic friend of mine lost 50 pounds ( without surgery) and is completely off diabetic medications.

I know my heart will be healthier with 60, 70, 80, 90' or 100 pounds gone.

Even if you cannot get off all meds, you be a healthier person overall.

They told me that the tissue died around the incision and then abscesses formed...This led to a lot of pain and agony. I had a temperature of 104 and I was squirting brown liquid out of my staples....I was pale as a ghost and kept going in and out, passing out! At first it was not painful..I just felt stuffed all the time and off....As it progressed I got worse...I almost died...And my legs and feet started to really swell up...That was the first sign of a problem.

Where did you get your sleeve done?

I certainly felt some regret the first week. I felt pretty miserable, but I also had two hernias repaired at the same time which added to the discomfort. Eating is uncomfortable if I eat too much, but I am learning my body's signals now and today I ate with almost no discomfort at all. I also started Zantac which helps control the acid and that made a big difference too. I think they need to prepare patients better for what to expect and when it will end. I am 19 days out and finally beginning to feel better. Some days I'm not so sure I would do it again, but on the other hand I have lost 26 lbs since surgery, 36 since PATS. This is the least I have weighed in over 10 years! I try to tell myself that maybe I could have done this without surgery, but the fact is I never did. So, I suspect that as the weight continues to drop and I continue to recover I will be even happier that I made this decision to enhance my quality of life.

Thank you everyone!!! Your experiences and honesty has really helped me lots and hope it helps many others as well.

Well so far I've survived my liquid diet and scheduled for my surgery in 2 days, Thurs., 11/14/13. Arce inky lots a few pounds but that was the least of my worries, it was how to survive while being a diabetic/hypoglecmic while in thus liquid diet. My pcp took me off my diabetic metaformin meds as I did struggle the keep my sugar levels up during first couple of days.

Today is the first day I felt good and not so nervous or anxious. Tmrw I go see the Hops nurse for cross match pre-op surgery check in.

All your experience have lifted me and kept me motivated and asuures me I'm doing the rift things for all the reasons. Looking forward to all postive and successful WL dats ahead if me. Thank you all for your time to reply. I shall be back to share my experience, the good, bad and ugly.

Peace!

I am 17 weeks out from my surgery and I can pretty much eat anything I want but most things I dont eat because I dont like how I feel when I eat them. I guess if I have any regrets about the surgery it would be that I miss EATING! I miss my love of food and enjoying my meal. However i dont miss all the horrible side effects of loving food. I dont ever really feel hungry anymore, I eat because I know I need to eat. And when I do feel hungry, I eat about 4 bites of something and im done. I know it sounds crazy but Sometimes I really miss eating a big meal! I eat a lot of Soup now because its filling but it doesnt leave me feeling stuffed. I dont like the way chicken and beef leaves me feeling stuffed, so I eat mostly fish and seafood now. I guess the sleeve sort of turned me into a vegetarian.....except I dont eat most veggies either....so maybe a seafood-atarian haha! I guess if I had to weigh the pros and cons, the pros defintely out wiegh the cons. Yes i miss food sometimes but the fact that im 4 pants sizes down in 17 weeks is amazing and I would have this surgery again in a second!

I am 6 weeks out.

I find my lack of interest in food a new kind of freedom.

I cannot eat everything.

I do not want to eat everything.

I still cook for. My wife and friends.

A few bites and I am done.

The weight is falling off!

FREEDOM

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
