Interesting Article about The Biggest Loser

Big takeaway from the article for me was the similarity (intense weight loss with biggest loser and WLS) in regards to metabolism.

Quote from the article:

"Unfortunately, fat free mass preservation did not prevent the slowing of metabolic rate during active weight loss, which may predispose to weight regain unless the participants maintain high levels of physical activity or significant caloric restriction."

Anyway, it's an interesting read.

Yep. No doubt. Regardless of type of weight lost, metabolism will go down. Maintaining muscle will lessen the effect. So will increasing exercise. But no matter what you do, it simply takes less calories to haul a 150 pound body around all day than it does a 300 pound body. The good news is most 150 pounders have more energy to be more active than the typical 300lb person....thus balancing it all out.

You apparently had energy enough to walk/bike 100 miles last month....plus whatever energy it takes you to fly back and forth to the emerald city everyday. That cannot be easy. :P

One of the problems I had was that I had a very low metabolism due to only eating 1 large meal a day...It went to a slow crawl.. They worked with me and now it is better then it was, but the idea of it going beck to a crawl unless I exercise in extreme..Crap...now this is another thing I will worry about....

Right now I can't sit still always on the run....Love the renewed energy...Really, really don't want to go back....yikes!

You know the fact of the matter is most of our metabolisms are screwed from years and years of yoyo dieting...

That is unless you were one of those lucky ones that were just fat always was never exercised and ate nothing but crap until surgery.. :D

My surgeon and I have had these discussions.

My metabolism is altered and don't get comfortable at any point and think you can eat like that 150 pound woman sitting next to you that never had a weight problem...

I always wondered how many of those contestants succeeded in keeping the weight off after a few years. If the author's interviews showed around 85-90% of the contestants regained some or all of their excess weight then that seems to be totally in line with the other weight loss (without surgical intervention) studies.

Guess the echo of Jillian Michaels shouting in your ear fades over time... If only it were that simple :lol:

Yes very few of them! The fact of the matter is unless you turn into a crazy exercise addict afterwards it unsustainable...

And I may have the crazy addict part down but that's about it :P

M2G, Thanks for sharing the article. The article contains some interesting points, but is lacking in a lot of detail. To me the most interesting omission was the reporting of a 500 excess calorie decline in BMR after 7 months after the show ended. To me that is totally expected and makes no comment at all regarding long term effects. Instead the study would be much more useful if it showed if the BMR increased from that dip over the next few years. I would expect that after that much weight loss that there would be some excess slowing of BMR for life even, but it really matters if the participants showed a 500 calorie slowing of BMR after 5 years, or a 100 calorie slowing of BMR after 5 years.

The fact that most participants showed a regain of most of their lost body weight is not a surprise either. In fact, I would have been surprised if it had shown that. It is a little surprising that only 85 - 90 percent of the participants showed substantial regain, since it is my understanding that most people who lose weight by dieting and exercise alone without surgery show a higher percentage of people who regain.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
