Sleeve size and leaks

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any info about this? I know my doctor does a larger sleeve but stated some doctors are dling a European sleeve which is pretty small. Would like any info on this as far as problems, nausea, ability to get food in easily and of course more leaks. Thanks!

My surgeon uses a slightly larger tool for gauging the stomach size. His reasons were to reduce discomfort and nausea. (keep in mind this is only slightly larger than the usual size). I can still only eat about 5 bites of solid food before feeling full. I can drink about 8 ounces slowly. Hope this helps.

Don't think it is related... Mostly it is surgeon preference!

I had the same question before my surgery. I discussed it with my surgeon who does not use the smaller sized bougies (32 and 34 F). According to my surgeon a 36 F bougie is in the middle and actually only millimeters larger than a 32 and 34 F size. 36 F is what I have. Like ThinnerDaysAhead said above, I too can only get in about 5 bites.

Also here is some information I found during my Quest that might help with what you are asking. I know many people who have smaller size bougie and no issues whatsoever. :)

Really a question best discussed with your own surgeon however. Sorry have not heard of a European sleeve. Very best of luck to you!

It is my understanding that smaller sleeve size is somewhat associated with long term issues like reflux. I do NOT know how accurate that is or if it is just a theory.

My surgeon used a 38 - and you know what, I think the actual size stomach you get depends on alot of things like your anatomy... the bougie size is only part of it.

My surgeon used a 40 bogie. Which I didn't find out until I asked 2 wks after. It took me a few to be ok with it but I'm glad he did. I can eat 1/2 cup or 4oz of food at one time and sometimes I cant even finish that. I read somewhere it may depend on your stomach, if its long or if its short. But I'm not a doctor so IDK :)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
