Pre-op diet seems very extreme. Anyone else?

Recommended Posts

My pre-op diet is an all liquid diet that lasts 7 days. We have to get in at least 64 oz of Water and can have unlimited sugar free Jello and sugar free popsicles. But they limit our Protein to 20 grams a day! So one diet drink and a cup of chicken broth each day and that's it! I am on day 2 and having headaches and dizziness. Also a complete bitch lol. I'm amazed that they haven't had anyone pass out during this. Anyone else on a crazy pre-op diet? And how are you doing with it?

The pre-op diet is rough but you will get through it. The first few days are the hardest, but after day five it seems to even out. My pre-op diet is 7 days of full liquids, 3 days of Clear Liquids. I've lost 14 lbs. in nine days. Good luck to you!

So strange about the 20 grams of protein. To me that is an OMG. I'm on my pre-op right now for 6 more days, 70-80 grams of Protein Powder daily, 64 oz of water (which can include the protein powder) sf jello, sf popsicles, broth, crystal light, but all of it has to be clear liquid. Plus if I get weak can eat a pouch of tuna but not on a daily basis. You are basically getting no nutrition at all and your body will pull from your muscle mass for energy that you aren't getting. I had the headaches the first two days but no dizziness, but think mine was caffine related. But I know when I haven't had enough protein as my muscles sorta burn or my arms and legs feel weak. I really feel for you. Best of luck.

Yeah, 20 grams of Protein doesn't sound right. Perhaps you should call your doctors office to make sure you didn't misunderstand. Just double check.

I've asked different people in the office just to make sure and they said 20 grams is all I can have pre-op. After surgery, It's 60-75. A woman in one of my classes was telling the nutritionist what she ate on her first day of the diet and her total was 25 grams of Protein and the nutritionist said not to let it happen again! If I keep feeling like I'm going to pass out, I'm going to start cheating by adding a low-cal, low fat, low carb, high Protein Drink each day. Since everyone else seems to get 60 grams/day, I doubt it would hurt. Plus they said my liver was already small, but I had to do the diet anyways because It's just the program's rules.

I'm sure it's hard to read that if you're on your phone like me, but it says low carb, low cal, low fat, low Protein diet for one week and then towards the bottom, it says 20 grams/day

I live in the uk and our pre diet was .........

6 pints of skimmed milk per 24 hours

1 cup (200ml) of chicken stock for salts/proteins

1 pint of sugar free jelly/jello

tea/coffee/diet soda

We had to do this for 6 whole weeks and it was 6 months before operation and then again for 6 weeks before the Operation and then for 3 weeks after.....

It makes you upset, dizzy, tired, angry, nasty and lil miss evil arse but trust me, its only a week of the rest of your life, grit your teeth and do it ... you will so proud of yourself when you have finished x Good luck

Yep, was awful but we got through it, Every night when i climbed into bed i was proud i had gotten through another day......... we could have 2 sticks of sugar free gum too a day ... are you allowed that? It stopped that horrible tasteless nasty thing in your mouth, either that or brushing your teeth 40 times a day :) Just remember, Its NOT Forever and you are doing amazing x

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the gum would be okay. I'll have to try that. How much did you lose pre-op?

That's an amazing loss. Thanks so much for your input and support! I've stuck to the pre-op diet 100% and my surgery is tomorrow! I'm down about 13 lbs and I'm so proud of myself :)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
