Seeking mentor - preferably someone with lots of doubts the closer they got to surgery

Recommended Posts

My name is Becca. I'm 41 and 281 pounds. I've had moderate success with Weight Watchers and exercise, but the weight always comes back. I'm now "pre" everything - pre-diabetic, pre-hypertensive. It's time for me to take this seriously. I've completed all of the requirements and been cleared by my surgeon. The paperwork was submitted to the insurance company on Monday and they're confident it will be approved. All good, right?

Now I'm second guessing everything! I keep feeling guilty that I should be able to do this "on my own" without surgery. Just had a friend start Ideal Protein and lose 10.5 pounds and 4 inches in one week. You get the picture.

I have a ridiculous amount of support with my decision, but I can't shake the anxious feeling.

I live in Washington, DC, but I'm interested in connecting with anyone who had these same feelings, but followed through with the surgery and can't imagine life without it (even if there were some complications).

Look forward to hearing from people and extend my gratitude in advance!

Hi becca! My name is Candace and as of saturday I'm 1 month out from surgery. I had all of the same doubts and concerns. Truth be told had they not given me the "I don't care meds" when they did I would have backed out completely. I was so scared! But my procedure went fine. I came out of it all completely at my self and in little to no pain. When there was pain it just tons of soreness. Was is it worth it? Absolutely! I'm down almost 30lbs. I was abt 273 pre op and now I'm in the 240s. However it has been hard and it is a lifestyle change. Everyday I learn something new abt my body. I have really good days and I have really bad days. On those bad days I fully rely on my support system. She gets me through a lot of days. Please contact me if you have any questions or if u need a little therapy, I would be more than happy to help.

Don't feel guilty. RNY surgery is simply a tool that will help you in your goal to get fit. The percentage of obesity is high. And the percentage of people who can successfully keep the weight off once they loose it without the help of surgery is around 5%. This is about your health and life expectancy. And what you are about to do takes courage. Thats something to be proud of. I have my surgery coming up on september 25th, and its scary the closer i get, but i have courage, and i'm worth it! And so are you!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
