How do you know that your old stomach stays healthy? What are the odds for cancer? My surgery has been done, but this is on my mind.

I never thought about that.

I would think that if the old stomach wasn't healthy and working correctly, you would have issues with it not producing bile and have bad issues with not being able to have bowel movements. Just my thoughts.

It's still alive and fully functioning. Still creates bile and is reconnected lower on the small intestine where the bile mixes in to break down the food

During my surgery prep the nurse had me sign a biopsy agreement and I was told that during surgery my Dr will do the biopsy on the colon and stomach and send it out. If I don't hear anything with in 2 weeks I'm all good. It's been 6 weeks and I guys its all good.

Also I was told that belly fat feeds cancer and the more I loose weight the less I'm at risk for cancer.

Yes, I understand the function of the stomach, but how would you know if it became diseased? I guess there would be symptoms.

My surgeon addressed this during most of our meetings. If you had a history of stomach cancer in your family you should have indicated this on your pre-op form. There is no way to "monitor" the old stomach on a regular basis because they can no longer put a scope down your throat to check it as they can in "non-rny" patient. He says that you should stay in contact with your primary care doctor and surgeon throughout the rest of your life, but unless they check it via sonogram for growths or something on a regular basis it can be difficult to monitor.

That being said he said that again, unless you have a history of stomach cancer in your family then that shouldn't be high on your worry list.

Don't be afraid, just be informed. I did it 5 weeks ago, and I've lost 42 pounds. I'd do it again, but be aware the first 2 weeks are tough, but you can do it!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
