My coworkers are pretty supportive about gastric bypass surgery and most of them know someone who has had it done.

However I am seeing a reoccurring theme around happiness and I would like some feedback from the forum.

Several people have told me that the people that have had gastric bypass surgery are having problems being happy with what they cannot eat at office functions. My coworkers say their friends concentrate on what they cannot have and their outlook has changed.

My wife is concerned that I will not be the positive person that I am now after surgery.

Any opinions?

You're as positive as you make yourself. I, myself, work in an office with 13 other women. Only one has to watch her weight. All use any excuse to have a pot luck plus weekly staff meetings where they order lunch. Here's how it goes: It's Wednesday, at 10 they start deciding on where to order from, by 11 they have what they want and call it in, at 11:30 someone leaves to pick it up, then mass consumption at 12 to 12:30.

Every birthday, every holiday...it's a potluck. I'm going to bring my lunch, I'm going to snack on my Snacks and I'm not going to dwell on the fact that, hey--not everyone is created equal.

I work next to a girl that weighs a buck and a quarter and she eats ALL DAY LONG. First off, she eats two waffles with Peanut Butter between them like a sandwich. Then she moves to the poptarts. It's messed up.

I'm just going to ignore what I can and have fun losing. :)

I kind of understand what you are saying/asking. Im only 3 weeks out so I'm not sure what it will be like in the future. I'm a trained chef and LOVE food. Since surgery I've bad no appetite and could care less about food. I used to find happiness in food, trying new things, going out to eat but now I'm more like "meh" to food.

And to add to that.... I am still a happy person like before. Just because I don't like food anymore doesn't mean I don't like all the other great things in my life.

I am struggling with this myself. I too amd 3 weeks out and find myself often thinking about how I used to eat and how food controlled my life. I still love to cook, but I find myself craving healthier things. I am also a happy person and am just starting to get the old me back. Food doesn't define who you are, and for the first times in our lives, we are going to be able to live a life free of cravings and being overweight.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
