Really! How bad is the PAIN?

Recommended Posts

When I got my lapband in 2011 I was in a lot of pain after surgery. I'm now seeking a revision to RNY. Is the pain worse? The same? How long is the recovery? I can take it. Give me the TRUTH! ;)

My only other abdominal surgery was a c-section, and that was definitely worse than WLS. But, I'm not going to lie, that first night was a bitch. I was lucky, I did not have the gas pain.

I had a Lap GB on February 7, and today I have been off pain meds four about 3-4 days, and I was only using them at night for about 5 days before that. I even cleaned, walked to get my daughter from her bus stop a few blocks away, and managed steps, etc.. For a long time, the only pain I had was standing/sitting. Once I was in position, I was comfortable.

I do suggest, if don't have one, borrow or rent a reclining chair. I slept sitting up for several nights after surgery. Once I was sleeping in bed, I used pillows under my torso to help with discomfort.

Yikes! I had the gas pain the first time and it stays with you for a while. I'm a sap and don't like being in pain. Every stinking time I get my stomach cut its the pits, but I have seen people that are totally fine after this. If only I can b so lucky!

Thank u Debbie!!! (HUGS) :)

Lol...I had a fentanyl pump for the first day and a half in the hospital. I hit that button every time it turned green, and I started asking for the PRN pain stuff as soon as I could have it. (Lortab) That shit was awesome! The only problem with that is I went a week with no...movement. Pain or constipation...tough choice.

I am a total big baby when it comes to pain.. i can't handle any pain what so ever. With that being said, the surgery was not bad at all. The first night was rough, I kept on hitting the morphine button :) After the first 24 hours I only hurt when I had to use my stomach muscles. Sitting up and trying to get out of bed hurt like hell but once I was up I was fine. I was back to work in one week, I worked 1/2 days in the office and 1/2 day at home. My recovery time was pretty quick I think because I was up moving around. 10 weeks after my RNY I had to have my gallbladder removed and that hurt more than the RNY.

Oh wow! The pain level good news having to have a second surgery sucks.

I too plan to "hit the button" as often as I can lol. I really hope it's not too bad.

Did any of you guys use the stomach band???

Everyone handles RNY differently.. some people have tons of pain and some not. Don't get too freaked out about the pain, the doctor and nurses are there to help you deal with it. You heal faster when you body is not in pain so believe me they want to keep you pain free and up and moving around ASAP !!!

I guess I'm lucky. I didn't feel any pain and only used pain medicines from the pump the first night then never touched it again. The only pain was getting up out of bed after sleeping but it wasn't that painful. Hope everything goes well for you and a sorry pain free recovery!

I had my lapband to bypass surgey on the 29th of jan. It was rougher to me then the lap band . I was on my pain meds for two weeks now i just take tyenol every now and then . It does get better and better everyday ! I have not slept a whole night in my bed so i agree with getting a comfty chair ! Because i have been sleeping in mine for three weeks its just easier to get out of ! But bottom line is it is worth it ! The pain will go away and the results will be so worth it ! Best of luck to you !

Proud mommy to three amazing babies!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
