BOWEL MOVEMENT REGULARITY

Recommended Posts

My surgeon prescribes Colace twice daily post op. I had surgery this past Wednesday and began taking the Colace yesterday (Saturday) beginning to feel like I might need to have a bowel movement, but any sort of "pushing" has me a bit worried? Should I be? This would be my first BM since surgery.

I haven't had a bowel movement in about in four (4) days is that natural for most of you?

I love this forum where else can you talk by your B.M. I have the same problem, I am going to try the Miralax too.

I agree! I am just 9 days post op, but after it took forever for me to have my first BM. I have been about every other day. I have been eating unsweetened apple sauce, taking Colace, and I had a cup of Smooth Move tea. All of those things seem to be helping. I think it just takes time for our bodies to adjust. The first one was horrible though, not going to lie!

The gastric doc told me to take Dulcolax poop softeners or laxative..I could not go for 4 days. The laxative worked and I take the softeners everyday ..they like ducolax brand because it is tiny and works gentile. Milk of mag can be harsh ..and don't forget always push your Water Best of luck!

I wouldn't let it go more then four days. You can get VERY constipated or impacted bowels and then you need to go to ER and have them manually dig you out. I would check with your surgeon regarding what he recommends for his patients for Constipation and regularity. Mine says first start with MOM if that doesn't work 1-2 senna s at night and if that doesn't work Mirilax. Mirilax literally gave me diarrhea 5 hours after I took it so I wont do that again. Senna S works the best. Make sure you are getting plenty of fluids, fruits veggies and fiber... Good Luck

PS- I had one episode of BAD constipation that I resolved on my own- thank god i am a nurse-lol, I pretty much go everyday....

Fluids. I can get backed up and uncomfortable - but when I drink 48 oz of fluids - it doesn't happen. I am also eating salads at least once per day. Works for me.- good luck!

It all depends on how far out from surgery you are. The Protein, Calcium and Iron are constipating for me. My surgeon said no senna and to not go over 2 days without bm. The stool hardens if it sits in the lower colon/ rectum. Even using milk of magnesium, stool softeners I have to used Fleet enema to get it started then GI fine. I've felt like I was birthing a watermelon at times. Not fun. I would check with doctor to see what they recommend I always keep Fleet enemas on hand.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
