Pre-op liquid diets?

Recommended Posts

My surgeon doesn't include this in their program, but I do need to lose 20 pounds before surgery and am having trouble with it. Even taking phentermine I'm having trouble. How do these diets usually go? I was thinking of trying one to help me with losing. Is it straight liquids, full liquids, Protein Shakes, .....?

My two week liquid diet was pretty straightforward. I drank 160 calorie Protein shake at Breakfast, lunch and dinner. At 10.30AM and 3PM I ate a greek no fat yogurt. At 8.30PM I had a pudding [non-fat/no-sugar]. Total caloric intake per day was between 800-1000. With plenty of Water for hydration. I lost 12 lbs in 14 days. And while it was tough during the holiday season, I prioritized my health over all else and it turned out to be OK. I also was wearing a pedometer [Nike Fuel] and that gave me some gamification it terms of some exercise. [i challenged myself to walk more than 2 miles per day - and met my goal every day].

I wish you luck [and happy holidays]

Thanks! That sounds hard, but definitely doable.

And same to you :)

I lost 10 pounds in 11 days of liquids. I also did the Protein Shakes like mentioned above and then I did Jello, pudding and popcicles for Snacks, but I do like greek yogurt now that I am post op, never tried it prior. Oh and I loved sugar free popcicles, especially after surgery when it is difficult to drink and get your liquids in they were wonderful and went down with ease and taste good :) Good luck on your journey, you will be happy with your decision, I still have some days, but I am so happy I made this decision for myself. :)

I guess I'm going to have to try it. I'm nervous that I'll constantly be hungry and that I'll end up not being able to finish it. But I guess it's worth a shot!

I really want hungry. There were several days that I did not drink all the shakes because I was not hungry. Good luck!

My surgeon recommends a 2 week liquid diet in hopes to shrink a fatty liver. I am allowed 6 glucerna shakes a day. I am also allowed crystal light, teas, Water, and other no calorie liquids. The day before surgery is strictly Clear Liquids, no shakes. Usually patients lose anywhere from 15-22lbs in the 2 weeks. I start mine New Years Day!

So are any Protein Shakes ok? I have a container of the Body Fortress Protein Powder. Or are certain ones better?

I think it is a taste preference. Also make sure the Protein is high, but sugars are low.

I wouldn't buy Protein powder in bulk until after surgery. I did since I liked it, but post op it make me vomit. I tried it again since I am a couple weeks out and I still get sick, so I would suggest buying some of the smaller packages to "try" first for postop, watching protein and sugars. Preop, I wasn't as picky, looked for high protein/ low sugars, but just did what tasted good. Your taste does change some after surgery. I hated eggs, now I love them. I wish you the best, it was the best thing I ever did for myself :)

Thanks :) I still have half a container left and I'm trying to use it up before surgery so it doesn't go to waste lol

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
