May Bandsters~February Chat!

Hey Maysters,

Got a question for you. Now that most of us are around 3 months out from our 1 year bandiversary (give or take), what are some things you are going to do to Celebrate your success? What non scale aspirations do you have? Is anyone planning on doing somthing special...like a trip, massage, pedicure, etc?

For me, I hope to be somewhat close to my goal weight at that time. I want to go hanggliding and kayaking. I haven't really put much thought into it but we all deserve a reward for our hard work. I'm going to have to do something special to Celebrate my weightloss but most importantly my new improved health.

I'm back...Sorry for not posting sooner but we've kinda been riding on a cloud for about a week with my nephew. Thanks again to everyone who has held us up in prayer. He came home yesterday and everything has been smooth so far. He'll start back to school on Monday just for a couple of hours to reacclimate himself. By way of a friend and cousin, we have a 12x24 billboard now posted by I-80 that says "WELCOME HOME JONATHAN". We made reservations for a restaurant near the sign so when we finished eating we'd see the sign as we drove into town. It was so cool to see Jonathan's reaction to the sign with HIM on it. What a blessing he is to us!

The weight issues are troubling. I hate that I don't lose an ounce for weeks at a time then all of a sudden a lot comes off. It makes it hard to keep the faith when the scale doesn't move. It reminds me of the old diet days when you'd lose for a few weeks then plateau, then start gaining again. I'm so scared that when I'm not losing, I'll start gaining. I haven't been to the doctor since November. With the holidays and then the accident, I haven't had the time. So I'm looking at the 3rd week in March or the 1st week in April for my next fill. I am so proud of all of you who are at or near goal. You make me happy and keep giving me hope.

What did the doc say about the Protein levels? :phanvan

Could there be a physical reason for your throwing too much Protein? It could be that your body is getting enough protein in (which seems likely) but not able to process it properly? I'm having the same problem but with Calcium...and will be finding out what all the tests mean in a couple of weeks. Please follow up on this so we don't have to worry! :)

Thanks for asking and thanks for the link Myra!

I have been checking out Chicago and visiting friends in Indiana for the last few days so I havn't had a chance to update you.

I saw my dietician just before I left. When she learned that there was protein and keytones in my urine, looked at my bloodwork, asked me some questions about my calorie intake (1200-1400) and exercise, and did her little electrode test which shows that I have lost more muscle, she said that with the amount I am exercising (elliptical 30 minutes plus swimming for an hour or skiing for the day) I am just not getting in enough calories so my body is burning muscle along with fat.

She suggested a couple of things. First that I only do about 45 minutes of aerobic exercise combined with about 30 minutes of weight training to build my muscles back up. And to do this only 3-4 times a week and just do more recreational exercise the other days.

She said if I want to continue exercising at the same rate that I should really be eating at 1500-2000 calories a day.

I like doing the 90 minutes of exercise I have been doing 5-6 days a week because I am really noticing a change in my body. If I decide to continue to exercise at this rate, I will need to get a small unfil so that I can increase my calorie intake.

The good news is that I am continuing to burn fat at a pretty good rate and even though my protein levels were on the low side she said that by getting the exercise/calorie ratio in sinc that it would probably resolve itself.

I am going to call my surgeon today to schedule an appointment to discuss this with him and see what he thinks.

Hi all, sorry I haven't posted here in a while :) Hope everyone is doing well! I have been doing ok. I hit my goal weight last week and am trying to transition into maintainance. Its hard already. I want to make sure I don't get caught in the trap of eating too much because I hit where I want to be.

Marz - So glad your nephew is doing better. Thats great news!

Drews - How's the knee doing?

Alicia - I haven't thought about our 1 year bandiversary. Can't beleive its coming up so soon, this year has really flown! I need to do something to Celebrate for sure.

One thing that has been great is my quality of life. My family and I went to a Dallas Stars hockey game and I fit very nicely in the seat. Pre-band, I had to squeeze into the seat and crowded everyone around me. This time I had at least 6 inches between me and the arm of the seat. It was such a great feeling. Here is a pic of us we had taken at the game. I will try to be better about visiting more aften :)

great pic Neal!

Thanks Alicia - I learned my lesson too. Now that I get cold all the time anyway, wearing shorts to a hockey game is not a good idea!!! :)

It's nice to see you back marz. What a neat thing you all did for Jonathon!! I'm sure that will always be a special memory for him.

OU ~ You are the MAN!!

Linda ~ You must be a fat burning machine. I wish I had the problem of working out too much. Maybe I should give it a try. :guess

Alicia ~ Nothing planned for the anniversary yet. Good idea to start thinking about it.

Great picture Neal. I bet you WERE freezing your B-B-B-B beak off (anybody with a kiddo should recognize that Disney movie line:) ).

Well I am finally seeing some movement in the scales. Started out a pound shy of 280 and I can say I am now in the 250's. Not by much but still going in the right direction.:clap2:

My elliptical is going to be delivered on March 8th and then I have to have the folks contracted to put it together in for that. So it will probably be a couple of weeks before I have it to use. I am sooooooo looking forward to it.

Gotta run need to do some painting.

TTYL.

Myra

Hey everyone! I'm back.... Sorry I haven't posted lately. This is my first day to work this week. I woke up about 2:00 AM Saturday feeling, not right. Really nauseous and yucky. Well, that was the beginning of 72 hours of vomitting and diarreha... evidently I got the stomach flu/virus that has been going around. NOT FUN!!! Have you guys every really had to vomit since being banded? Well, I hadn't. I have never even PB'd. I was sooo scared that with each time I was gonna cause my band to slip. I ate my first food last night since Saturday evening.. and I still seem to have restriction and I haven't had any reflux or anything, so hopefully everything is fine with my band. Man, I hope none of you guys ever get this stomach virus, it was bad. My entire chest, neck, and back area is sore from all the wretching. After not having eaten for almost three days and all that came with the virus, I lost about 3 lbs. Which means that since my highest weight, I've lost 101 lbs. This WAS NOT how I wanted to Celebrate my 100 lbs lost! Thanks for listening everyone, sorry if it was TMI. Remember WASH YOUR HANDS CONSTANTLY!!! Especially if you go to the gym and use equipment after other folks.. this may be where I picked this thing up from.

Okay.. enough about me.. MARZ, I'm sooo glad that your nephew is home and doing better. I'm sure that the billboard was awesome for him, that was so considerate of you guys.

Linda - Keep up the great work!

Neal - your family is adorable, congrats on the fitting into the seat thing. Don't you just love that?

Alicia - I'm planning a "Girlfriend Getaway" for my anniversary with my best buds in the world... got to get it planned... Vegas? The Caribbean? Who knows?

Paladin - how's the job thing?the move? When is 3loves getting that fill?

Later Maysters!

Kim..... I can soooo relate to your stomach bug! I ahve been fighting a virus since last week and on Monday I had the pukey part. I called my doc right away and he got me a script for phenegran so I didn't puke. Today I am coughing and I am still running a fever. I am here at work but not for long I'm afraid.

Thanks Myra! Hey Drews! I had some phenegran and zophran, but I still vomitted a lot. Those meds basically knocked me out and when I woke up, I started the vomitting again. I hope you feel better soon! I'm at work and not happy about it...

Omg...kill me now. I too battled a nasty flu bug for nearly a week. I got sick very suddenly at work, had to leave in the middle of work. I can't even remember the last time that happened to me.

My mom was my resucuer. She delivered my Phenergan to my door step.

This same bug must be sweeping the country. At my job we have had lots and lots of people missing work from this.

Eewwww. My tummy felt like I had gone 10 rounds in the ring. I am finally feeling better.

Hope everyone feels better soon.

Well, I'm feeling better. Still a little worried that I may have caused a "slip". My surgeons office said as long as I'm not vomitting, having acid reflux, etc. that it should be okay. All I know is my guts are sore! Glad you survived that virus Missy!

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
