Protein Question

Recommended Posts

I am a new bandster and I have not gotten a fill yet after my 01/12/07 band date but I am eating as per the bandster rules and I find myself missing my fruits and vegetables. There is not as much room after eating my Protein as I would like, some meals. So my question is.. What if I drink one of those protein bullets and ate fruits and veggies? Is that acceptable?

I know what you mean about missing fruits and vegetables. I'd check with your doc but I think that would probably be OK. I think people don't often do the fruit and vegie plan you propose for a couple reasons: a) quite a few people have trouble eating a lot of fresh fruit with the band, and the same goes for vegies unless they are cooked very well (overcooked), and :) I think it is the Proteins that give you that "full" feeling. Getting that "full" feeling without eating a lot of volume is what makes the band work for a lot of people. You may not be able to get the same full feeling when the bulk of what you eat is fruits and vegies.

Having said that, I don't think there is any reason why you can't do what you are saying if it works for you. But of course I'm no expert. I'd still check with your doc/nutritionist about this. I'd also be cautious about diving in to a lot of fresh fruit and vegies until you know these items will agree with your band, and not get stuck.

I'd simply eat a bit less of the Protein food and more vegetables, fit in a bit of fruit in between meals.

Having said that I guess it depends how tight you are and how much you can eat. I can eat enough that way to get enough Protein. I actually have changed the way I eat - I used to eat each thing on my plate separately, now I take forkfuls mixed up to make sure I get a bit of everything.

I dont necessarily agree or disagree with the protein first thing long term for people - I know it does make you fuller and you need your protein, but I think there's a major drawback in eating that way in that if you eat a chicken breast, then you've got no room for the vegetables. chicken is good for you but it doesnt make a balanced meal if that's all you eat!

And there's no point getting good levels of protein if you're low on other Vitamins and minerals.

Perhaps logging on fitday for a while and seeing where your levels of all things are at could help?

I am 5 days banded plus I had a surprise 5 minutes b4 surgery. I had a hiatal hernia they repaired that I think has caused some added pain. So, I am in pain and have no appetite. Oh, I hear my stomach growling but I am not interested in the Clear liquids that I have to stay on until Wed. (then creamy for 4 wks). Stayed off pain meds today to see if that is affecting me. Did well except for the mildly dagger like pains in my upper abdemon! The thought of swallowing that much Tylenol is gagging me worse than the pain! :hurt

But I have only had about 50 grams of protien since Tuesday night and when you figure I was on a 2 wk liquid diet b4 surgery that also became undesirable, I am concerned about healing with no protien.

I know I need to just force it down. Isopure is as good as gets for protien. It's full of it. I just need to swallow it and shut up I guess! =):violin:

I'm a big believer in chocolate Unjury. I drink that for Breakfast since my band tightens up in the night. Then I have bacon and eggs about 2 or 3 in the afternoon. I can eat two slices of bacon and two eggs if I go slow. I have to have cooked veggies and I tried to eat and apple and that was a disaster. But cooked fruit and veggies work. We are supposed to get 60 grams of Protein a day which I get with Unjury and eggs and bacon. I also eat meat for dinner though not a lot. I just wish I could eat a really good roll.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
