Left Side & Back Pain

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I'm almost 3 weeks post op and was wondering if it's normal to still be having pretty bad pain on my lower left side of my stomach in between the left incision and my belly button. That area is still numb to the touch... I can get buy during the day with just Tylenol every 4 hours but when it comes to sleeping I have to take Atleast one of the prescribed painkillers. Also it still hurts a lot whenever I bend over. And back pain, was wondering if anyone else experienced that within the first couple of weeks as well? Thanks!!

im just over 3 weeks too and have in the last few days been having a similar pain. cant deciede if its actual pain, gas or just my stomach wanting more food! maybe its just our bodies getting used to all the changes. something that is screwing with my mind is that i have no idea where my stomach is (i know this sounds strange...) but if i the doctor had told me physical where my stomach is i could realt more to the pain. im sure that probably doesnt make sense to anyone but me!

i have also suddenly began to feel nausous at the smell of food.. especial protien powder!!

hope you feel well soon! good luck

I certainly hope so!! I talked to my surgeon about it at my last appointment and he said it is because the internal incisions and staples are harder to heal. The left side incision is where they put the stapler in if you had your surgery done laparoscopicly and that the pain will take a while to fade. I was concerned it was maybe my liver or something but he told me that my liver is up more and my even close to where the pain was.

But I am just really annoyed at the pain now, i still can't drive comfortably because whenever I'm in a sitting position it hurts, and bending over is awful.

I really hate being a huge complainer but I'm just overwhelmed and annoyed.

The stomach is just beliw between your breasts. I knew where mine was right away. It does not like to be empty haha. I have the pain too and I feel crippled. These surgeries can take a few months to be almost pain free. Ice packs help on that left side and heating pad helps the lower back.

Thank God I'm not going crazy. I mentioned this in another thread. There were a couple of us experiencing this. Mine is about 1.5 inches to the left of my belly button. My skin actually feels kinda numb to the touch. Right under my skin is a burning sensation like no other. I have to wear a binder and put an ice pack between the layers on that spot. When I walk I keep constant pressure on it. If I gag, cough or laugh it really pulls that spot. I'm dreading having to sneeze! I also take rx meds for the pain. Only seems to cut the pain for about 30 minutes. I literally feel like I could do jumping jacks if it weren't for that one spot! In my head I'm thinking that's where they reconnected our intestines. I'll see what my doc tells me. Every surgeon is soooooo different. Not glad you're hurting but you're not alone....

My doc said to massage that spot. He explained why but I can't remember what he said. It took a little while and didn't feel particularly good, but the massaging helped.

I had the same pain and it eventually goes away. Sometimes it took me by surprise but, then it would go away just as fast. Lots of healing being done in there and it takes a good 6-8 weeks to heal all the incision/cut sites inside and out.

Ur pain and feelings are completely normal. My surgery was 9/17/12 and I went through the samething just stop hurting about a week ago. Lay down put on ur abdominal binder and alternate heat and ice to the left side of ur stomach. If ur problem is the same as the rest of ours and it sounds like it is u will feel loads better. If u don't have a binder just apply pressure. But the binder works best u can get one at Walgreens or Walmart. Hope it is what we were all experiencing in the September members forums.please read through our post n see start with the post dated after the 20th. Hope this helps and hope u feel better.

I did suffer back pain after surgery, it started as soon as i woke up from the anesthesia And it lasted for at least a month (i always had back pain but that one felt different) i asked my surgeon and he said it was probably bc i was not standing straight, i’m almost 3 months out and sometimes i still feel it.
I used a heating pad and it helped a lot.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
