Almost all doctors require that you have at least 60g of Protein a day. My surgeon requires all of her patients to have 100g a day. So the answer to your question is YES' date=' Protein is a very big part of losing weight. It's also absolutely essential for many other things associated with losing weight.

I sometimes wonder if doctors and others in their offices do a good job of helping folks understand the importance of protein. Unlike fats or starches, your body cannot store protein. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and the nine "essential amino acids" must be obtained from food - they are essential because your body cannot manufacture them. That means they have to be replenished. Every day. Carbs are king when it comes to energy but when you're on a low carb diet, your body will use protein for energy instead. Every cell in your body contains protein. Remove all of the Water in your body and 75% of what's left is - protein. Feeling tired following your surgery? Eat more protein! No energy? Eat more protein!

Protein is critically important in the healing process following surgery.

Protein is used extensively to repair and regenerate damaged tissue.

Protein is a key player in helping the body fight off bacterial and viral infections.

Protein will help minimize muscle loss during rapid weight loss.

And protein will help reduce hair loss to a minimum.

Your body needs protein!! A lot of it!!

You might try getting some unflavored Protein powder. First thing in the morning, put a scoop of the powder in a small bowl. Depending on the powder, one scoop is 20g or more of protein. When you eat or drink something, put a pinch of the Protein Powder in. You can add it to almost anything and if it's just a pinch, you shouldn't notice the taste too much. By the end of the day you've eaten an additional 20g of protein, a pinch at a time.

Try Protein shakes, powders, bars, and when you're cleared for regular food - chicken, fish, turkey, canned tuna, canned chicken, low fat ground beef, low fat cheese, low fat cottage cheese, string cheese, low fat milk, nuts, tilapia, shrimp, scallops, cod, halibut, lean steak (all fat removed), eggs - I have an Excel file that is a list of about 125 grocery store and fast food items, most of which are rich in protein. I've emailed it to dozens of folks on the forum. Post or PM me your email address and I'll be glad to send it to you.

Try anything you can think of until you're getting ALL of your protein in. Every day! You'll be glad you did and you're gonna love the new you!![/quote']

is protien a big part of losing the weight fast? I'm barely getting any in... I've lost 12lbs since surgery on 8/8/12

Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk

FYI, costco makes a premixed protien shake that is Bariatric approved. PREMIER PROTIEN, 11 oz. carton is one serving and 30 gms. of protien and they taste good! vanilla & chocolate only, about $22 for an 18 pk. case. Also, Isopure makes an unflavored protien. I have not tried this, but the reviews look good and a friend of mine says it is good. This can be added to most foods, i.e. Soups, drinks, veggies, etc. Can be mixed with just Water, b

but some reviews said it's lousy with just plain Water. Good luck, my surgery is this Wed., 9/5.

I could not stand the powder Protein drinks or any drinks for awhile. But someone suggested I add a banana and/or other fruit (I use banana and forzen strawberries which work like ice) and use almond milk or Silk instead of Water and it tastes tons better. Do not get me wrong' date=' they still are not great and someday I can barely gag them down, but before I could not gag them down, so it is am improvement. So I do one shake in the morning (25 G Protein since I do only one scoop and 8 oz liquid so less to drink) then I eat protein at every meal and if needed both Snacks. I am almost 3 months out and was able to start increasing my food around 2 months which broke my 3 week stall and being regularly losing since, about 3 pounds a week average.

Just experiment and force yourself gag down the one you can handle the best. I now can tolerate the premixed ones, but they are too expensive to drink except for once in awhile when I am in a hurry in the morning or run out of bananas like today.[/quote']

At my last Post Op appointment, the assistant stated to me that I should avoid Protein shakes completely, and focus only on protein from solid foods, meats, cheese, Greek yogurt, Beans, etc. a previous assistant had recommended the powdered Protein Shakes. All confusion aside, I am happy with leaving those chalky drinks behind, replacing them with meats, fish, and shrimp. Love the kippers and large & small precooked peeled and deveined shrimps, especially with a dab of cocktail sauce. Heavenly delicious protein.

Absolutely no doubt that Protein from real food is the best way to go IF you can get ALL of your doctor's recommended daily protein by eating real food. That can be difficult for folks who are still on pureed or soft foods and sometimes even after you're on regular foods. My surgeon requires 100g a day. I'm right at 11 months out and would still have problems hitting that number without my daily 35g Protein Shake for Breakfast. Real food is always the best option. But if your choice is shakes/powders/bars/other protein supplements and getting all of your daily protein, or just eating real food and falling short of your daily protein requirement, the supplements are likely a better option.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
