I'm still preop but for me it was my bmi and the heart to heart talk with my surgeon . He was willing to the sleeve but he felt the rny was a better fit for me and after a ton of research I did the rny was my choice . Good luck with your choice

If I were to oversimplify the choice, I think it comes down to what your biggest behavioral obstacles are.

I ruled out the lap band and sleeve because, as my surgeon said, I could still sip milkshakes and nibble on cheeseburgers until I'd gained another 100 pounds. If you want more freedom to still eat certain things (which is a completely valid reason to opt for one of these - it just depends on self-control) then the sleeve or the band might be for you. However, the percentage of excess weight loss is less for these two than for the RNY.

The sleeve is actually pretty darn close in terms of weight loss to the bypass. And the part of the stomach that distributes a hormone that causes hunger is removed, so that's a great perk. You will have to remind yourself to eat.

I might have chosen the sleeve if my insurance carrier covered it, but they don't. I chose the RNY because I wanted the dumping syndrome, which causes you to get sick if you eat anything too high in fat or sugar. Some people don't want that, but I felt like I needed it to help me change my relationship and behavior with those kinds of foods.

My surgeon has videos that go over each surgery and it's pros and cons on his website: http://poplawskibariatric.com/for-prospective-patients/

If you can, watch those videos because I couldn't have made my decision without them.

Good luck to you!

I choose RNY because of the opportunity for maximum weight loss. Also believe it or not I like the fact that I'll be able to have the dumping syndrome. I know myself and I'm hardheaded and the ability to dump when I eat something stupid and my body is like "hey moron seriously?!" and to actually be able to be full. I like that idea.

Good luck in deciding! :)

I want the dumping syndrome as well. I want sweets to make me sick like bacon does now lol I gave up almost all pork I'm also hoping it helps with hunger. When I can control the hunger I can lose weight.

I chose the RNY for a totally different reason. I have diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, low thyroid, arthritis of the back and hip, neuropathy, and retinopathy. In march I had lazer treatment in one of my eyes. My eye doctor told me that if I didn't get a grip on the diabetes, I would end up blind within 10 to 15 years and I am only 34! RNY gives me a better change of getting the diabetes under control so that was my major motivation for this surgery. I originally was going to have the lapband but there was no guarantee with that surgery for the diabetes to get better.

surgery date: 7/30/12

My dr told me if I was a patient person the band would work, I am NOT patient so I went. RNY the band needs adjusted and etc.

Im still pre op but I've chosen the RNY because I am at risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease you name it I'm at risk of having it. But do your research and find the one that is right for you and talk to your surgeon about your different options. Good luck with everything!!

I pretty much got the chance to contemplate and pursue all 3. I looked into lapband in 2006. I met with the surgeon and opted out because I didn't like having to go back and forth to the Dr. to get the fills, and at 20 years old, I just wasn't ready at that point.

I then looked into the vertical sleeve gastrectomy, because my sister was in the process of getting it done, and I had a lot of time to research it with her. I was so head strong and determined to get this surgery and did not want the RNY for fear of malabsorption issues and how invasive the surgery sounds. After finding out that my insurance only covers RNY, I then decided to choose RNY.

I'm now so happy and at peace with my decision. I've researched and I feel comfortable knowing that the procedure I'm getting is known as the "gold standard" in terms of weight loss surgery. RNY has been around since around the 1950's, so there's been plenty of years to perfect the procedure and plenty of long term data has been obtained to prove that it is successful long term and safe. While the VSG surgery is emerging in popularity because there isn't much risk of malabsorption, there really isn't enough long term data right now to prove how successful the surgery is, since it's about 15 years new at this point. I also like the fact that RNY provides patients with more weight loss, quicker, and more patients in the long run tend to keep the weight off.

Go with what feels right for you. Do the research and you'll be able to come up with a decision. Weigh the pros and cons of each one :)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
