Question About The 6 Month Diet

Recommended Posts

So I guess I'm a "skinny" fat person. My BMI is between 40-41, with no other health issues. So I am right at the minimum requirement for the surgery. What happens if they want me to do the supervised diet for 6 months? Are they looking for you to be able to lose or fail at losing? It's confusing, because if I lose more than 10 lbs, I won't be eligible for the sugery, right?

They look to see if u can lose. I only lost 10 pounds during my 6 months supervised. That is a concern tho especially since ur BMI is only 40-41 u could end up losing too much to not be qualified for surgery

I'm a lot bigger than you but my Dr told me not to lose more than 10 lbs. So I kinda yo-yo'ed up and down on purpose. I know that sounds bad but I didn't want to risk not being covered. So one month I would lose 12 then next month gain 4 back. Your case is different since you are on the borderline. If I were you I would just maintain your current weight. Lose a lb or 2 here and there. I feel like I'm teaching you how to work the system, but sometimes you haves to!

My BMI at the beginning of my 6 months supervised appointments was 48.9 then after it was 46.8 and on the day I was approved by my insurance for surgery it was 43.5 and as of today (day 3 of my 14 day pre-op diet) its 41.7...my nutritionist told me to lose as much as possible but my BMI was high which 2 months before I started my 6 months my BMI was 51.8

When I first went to my appointment to get referred out to the surgical clinic my BMI was 51 and now its 48. I have 5 months until I have surgery but they usually go by your first weigh in weight. Thats what they told me. They want me to loose 50 more lbs as a goal before surgery to get my BMI to 40 at surgery. The closer your BMI is to 40, the easier the surgery will be on your body. Just to give you an idea I have lost almost 30lbs to get down 4 points on my BMI. I doubt I will even be close to a 40 BMI even if I reach the goal of 50lbs.

Someone in my required nutrition class asked that question and the dietician said that they use your first weigh in as what they submit to insurance. They want us to loose, but i was not told i have to loose any specific amount, just to try and loose some weight and that I will have to do the 2 weeks all liquid pre-op diet, i think thats a good idea, so i can prepare myself for what the next few months - year will be like.

I am following the diet my dietician at the bariatric clinic set for me. Protein first 60-80grams a day, drink Water, water, water...64 oz day....no carbonated drinks. I take in anywhere from 50-75 carbs a day, track my food, started walking (obtained a stress fracture in my foot the first week of walking which set me back), go to all the support groups twice a month, and staying focused. I use the myfitnesspal app to track my food diary.

I yo-yoed during my six months as well and ended up the exact same weight on my first and last appt with no problem. It wouldn't hurt to check your insurance guidelines. Must you be over 40? Some can be 35 with nothing else.

Yes mine is 40 without other conditions, 35 with other comorbid conditions.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
