My weakness in life is sushi. I see a lot of people cannot tolerate white rice. I've only been banded for a week, but I feel myself panicking at the thought of not enjoying it again! :) I am dreaming of the textures and tastes right now!! Is there anybody out there that has had good/bad experience with it?

I eat a lot of sushi, have never had a problem with it. We usually order more sashimi than sushi but the rice doesn't bother me. Sometimes if the Nori is tough and I can't break it down I hesitate to swallow it because I worry about it getting stuck...but so far so good.

I love sushi too!!! I read somewhere that people order their rolls and ask them to go a little easy on the white rice and just make sure they really dunk them in the sauce. It depends on how sensitve you are to white rice. My friend can't have hardly any, so she would order if very, very lightly rolled in white rice.

You can also get it wrapped in soybean paper instead of seaweed and it's not as tough. I LOVE sushi!!

The danger to me is due to the size of bite as much as because of the rice. If you get any kind of roll, it's very difficult to cut because of the seaweed, and it would be a mistake to pop the whole thing in your mouth like you probably would pre-band.

See my 10/14/2006 post under food for info on sushi after banding. Just have them make it with soybean or rice paper instead of seaweed and skip the rice. My DW actually prefers sushi rolls that way.

Thanks for the info.. I was wondering the same thing about sushi. I have only been eating sushi a little while before band. glad to see there is still a way.

I love sushi in a big way but since banding have learned to love sashimi and stay away from the rolls altogether. Rice just takes up too much room in my tummy--two bites fills me up--and the seaweed has gotten stuck and given me the worst PB I ever had.

Sashimi is the perfect bandster food, though. The ultimate lean, tender Protein. :biggrin1:

Newbie here, quick question...what the heck is PB???

PB = Productive Burp. Sometimes when you eat too fast, take too big of a bite, or overfill your pouch, the food comes right back up, along with a lot of slime (mucus). Nothing to be concerned about, though. Just the body's way of telling you that you overdid it!

I do well on sushi but I can't eat very much of it. I am lucky to get down 1 roll and maybe to pieces of Unagi. I order the spicy tuna roll and Unagi. Those 2 seem to be the best combination for me. Good luck. I know what it is like to love sushi. Go try some when you are on solids.

My husband and I ate sushi two or three times a week before I was banded. The first time I tried sushi after getting the band, I spent most of the evening in the ladies room. Not pleasant. I found that sashimi and things like tuna or salmon salad worked better for me. My sushi bar makes a spicy tuna salad and rolls it in very thinly sliced cucumber, then slices it. FABULOUS! And low carb without the rice. So I still enjoy the flavors and textures, just changed my choices a little.

Ah! I was thinking the same thing. I've just been banded and sushi is my favourite food, by far. Someone told me that it'd different with everyone.. on what they can tolerate (foods) and what they can't. Yeah well thats my hope, lol, as soon as i'm off my post-op diet i'm definitely going to try.. at least. :scared:

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
