Is 185 a good weight

I am 6'3", 58 years old and currently working towards surgery on 12/23. I started at 362 in July, currently 325. This whole topic of goals is an interesting one to me. I know I need to set goals (very goal oriented), but not sure what is realistic for me. My doc seems to think that 200 lbs is achievable because of how I have performed with diet and exercise over the last few months. That seems pretty low to me! I was 220 when I got married 34 years ago and seems like a reasonable target since I have been there before. But I don't want to set an unrealistic goal, high or low.

I think I am in the camp of seeing where I end up while making a strong commitment to the plan. My goal is to get healthier, improve my fitness level and get rid of the future issues that are caused by obesity. If that ends up being 220 or 200 or even 180, I think I will know when I get there.

I am 6'2" and started at a bit over 400lbs. My doc thought I could hit 210. I hit 220 and that seemed like IT. I'm happy and healthy at this weight, and I'll likely stay here. I'm not rail thin, I could surely stand to lose a little more. My BF% is in 20.4. I'm good with that. I never wanted to be an underwear model. I can see some ab definition, that's good enough for me. I'm strong and I can do all the things athletically that I could never do before. Isn't that goal? It is to me.

I've tried to lose more bit to do so means starving myself. Plus, when I do, the weight seems to come from places I don't want it to come from. My face gets gaunt. It's not pretty. I think I look better at this weight and most importantly.....it's sustainable.

My ideal is purported to be 170, so I put that as my goal. If my goal were 200, like so many of you, I'd make it 199, just to break into the 100's! Honestly, I'll be surprised if i get below 185, but you gotsta have goals! What's that famous graduation speech? Better to aim for the moon and miss it than to aim for the gutter and hit it.

I am 5'10"

Short term goal 200

Long term goal 185. (In agreement with doctor)

I guess I'll evaluate how I feel when I get there.

When I was on Weight Watchers My "ideal weight" according to them was between 159-179... I am 6 foot tall! When I started my journey back in 2007 I was 430 lbs... I had the lap band surgery... I lost about 150lbs... However I had to have the band removed because of complications last October... I went back up to 300 lbs... I had my sleeve surgery on Sept. 11th! I'm down to 276. I would like to get at least 200lbs and see how I feel... I think that the US weight ideals are crazy low... You should set a short term goal, see how you feel and if you want to go for more- do it! Whatever makes you feel good!

I am 5'11" (maybe even 6' now that I stand taller with better posture) and my body carries 180-185 well with a bf % of 16. If I go below 180 # then I start to get all the "you are too skinny" remarks from family. My lowest was 170 # and that was too low. This is what I am finding out since my post above.

If I go below 180 # then I start to get all the "you are too skinny" remarks from family. My lowest was 170 # and that was too low. This is what I am finding out since my post above.

I am 5'10". With a goal of 185#.

Eating right and working out hard.

I appreciate you posting the daily calories you take in in that previous post. I'm finding now, far below my goal but quietly creeping back because I'm not running in the winter, that my normal range of 1,800ish is very hard to stay at. I'm not quite HUNGRY, but I'm taking in more than that now, net exercise, and think I need to ratchet it back. But you're saying you're doing 2,000+, and you're a bit shorter than I am. Have to talk to my NUT about it on my appointment this week.

I am 5'9" like the OP. i was built very similar to him. I was sleevesd in November last year. I got down to 150(it was a number i wanted to see). I stayed there for a short time and eventually realized that was too low. I put on 15lbs and am very happy where I am. No more comments about being too skinny. I am eating around 1600 calories and 100 g of Protein a day to maintain. i also work out 5-7 days a week. You will know when you are at a weight that you feel good at. Good Luck.

Glad to help. It does take a bit of effort to find that magic balance point considering all the variables. Lots and lots of trial and error as none of the metrics (TDEE, BMI,etc) are specific enough to your set of circumstances, especially if you are active. And you need to adapt as your body mechanics are not a static fixture. I am finding my weight will creep and fall even though I seemingly and eating the same, drinking the same amount of Water, sleeping the same and exercising the same. By same I mean within a range of expected guidelines I have set for myself. The body is truly a dynamic system that requires constant adjustments based upon periodic measurements.

I'm 5'8" my ideal weight is 185 I would be comfortable with 200 but how can we turn the weight lost off once we get to our own goal? I don't want to keep losing I'm 10 weeks post op and am already halfway to goal with losing 43 lbs. Where and when does it end?

Increasing your calories will "turn" off the weight loss. The weight loss ends when you have found a good number of calories to eat daily that will neither cause you to lose or gain weight within a range of course. Most vets will have a 3-5 lb bounce range and try to stay in that window. The number of calories you eat depends on your activity level, your BMR, etc.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
