Twisted/flip-flopped sleeves

Recommended Posts

I've read several posts now about people whose sleeves flipped and/or twisted after surgery. This is a complication I haven't heard of, and I'm completely scared to death of it. It sounds like a total nightmare.

For those who've experienced or know anything about this, how does it happen?

For how long after surgery is this a possibility?

How do you know it has happened? And how do doctors fix it?

Never heard of this. Not even in the orientation or Pre op class I was required to take. They talked about leaks but not this. It must not be really common on a sleeve. Now on a by pass I've heard of the instetin getting twisted.

I was going to write what ali above wrote. The stomach part that remains after a sleeve is attached to our insides and doesn't twist. Only bypass pts have twisted bowel and can be life threatening.

Yeah never heard of this one and either. Where did you read these posts? Maybe they meant something else or that it just felt like their sleeve was twisted. I learned really quick while doing my research to not always believe everything you read though. My surgeon set me straight really quick my first appointment so I have found when in doubt I just ask him lol.

You can put "flipped" into the search box for some posts.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
