California people and state disability

Hi everyone just wondering about the how the state disability worked for everyone. My surgery is scheduled for Sept 17 can I contact EDD now? or do I have to wait for the day of? For some reason I cannot find the answer to this on their site even though I was sure that's what I had read. Thanks everyone in advance!
