I ran 4 miles yesterday in the morning, but also did an unconventional contribution to this challenge: helping my SIL move. Lifting heavy furniture and walking about 3 miles worth over 5 hours with hill. Up and down. Up and down. Let me tell you, I was drugged tired yesterday evening. Maybe low on electrolytes, carbs or both, but all I wanted to do was go into a deep slumber at 5 pm. Still sore today. I guess moving uses a lot of new muscles. :) dunno, felt like a lot of squats, deadlifts and biceps curls to me. I ran 4 miles this morning and will be going to crossfit this afternoon.

I have been doing cross fit for about 8 months and am fairly competitive in nature (at least against myself). Love the sport. My question for you' date=' as a former athlete: what constitutes an athlete? This is purely asked for my own benefit. I have never been an athlete before as spent most of my life obese.

Does being an athlete mean:

1. It is a profession?

2. That you have a coach and train almost daily?

3. You participate in sanctioned events?

4. ?

I can run 5k and 10k with very respectable times ( 18 min and 45 minutes, respectively), although not in sanctioned races. I run on my own.

I can Rx the cross fit WOD consistently.

I have a personal cross fit coach / trainer.

I train almost daily ( am training for cross fit regionals next summer, cross fit games after that and American ninja warrior after that))

I can squat 300 lb, bench 250lb and deadlift 350 lb. lifting heavy is not my forte, but I have been working at it as part of my athleticism in cross fit training.

Yet I am a software developer for a large multinational company for most of my waking hours.

Should I consider myself an athlete? Just wondering from someone who is a former athlete.[/quote']

Hey Fiddleman,

Yes to all of your questions! I've played a lot of sports: soccer, rugby, basketball, baseball, softball, track broke records in school, rafting, rock climbing, boxing and so much more...I've compeated in most of them. Soccer was my passion, had a scholarship but didn't go to that college. Later in life I was a trainer at 24º fittness also coached and refd soccer for the boys and girls club. I would never label myself as a pro.

My obesity came later... 4 pregnancies in a row and 2 miscarriages. My body just never recovered. I was used to spending a couple hours working out and with young babies I just couldn't, not enough time, my diet got worse and in a downward spiral I went.

But now I feel like myself again. I'm only 17 days out and I can't wait to pound the pavement again, go to the gym and just be out of the house. I have no problems getting my Water or Protein in and am very optimistic of my capabilities in the near future.

As for you... congradulations on all your success! You are amazing and I would love to compeat in cross fit and I love American ninja worrior that would be awesome to do... almost all the women on there never seem to get that far, still exciting to watch!

Well' date=' today has not been an active one. Since my "nap" extended from 2:30-6:30! Ha! Have only managed a mile or so today. Gonna try to kick out a couple more but with the one that outs my total since Monday at 29.5.

I'm quite proud of that since I have been walking an average of 2 miles 4 times a week! :)

Good work, all! Think of all those calories burned!!![/quote']

I love a good nap! I think you're doing great...keep up the good work.

Okay...I'm SUPER behind!!!! Had a 3 day girls weekend (does dancing count?) and I came back with a bug that included headache, fever, coughing, sneezing, runny + stuffy nose, and the chills. I'm going to try 5 miles in the am, and another 5 in the pm. I'll see how it goes. Still at 20 :(

Oh, in your state of health definitely don't overdo it. Drink plenty and focus on rest, no matter how much you want to get out there and run. The challenge will still be there when you are feeling yourself again. I hope you feel better soon. :)

I have fitbit one, am totally into it lol. MUST get all my smiley faces every day!!! :-)

I'm at about 50mi now, maybe a little less. Thanks to my wee fitbit/conscience, at least half of that must be from climbing stairs! I work on 7th floor, live on 4th floor (diff buildings obv lol) and I've been climbing up to both a lot. Makes me bum sore :-D

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
