Treadmill vs Recumbent bike

Recommended Posts

While I know the "what do you think about going against my Drs advice" post are not the most popular, Im looking for some advice. I have been cleared for walking at least 30 min per day. My surgeon didnt specifically state no to the exercise bike but it is not listed on my little handout. At the original seminar for the surgery he said do whatever exercise you were comfortable with as soon as you were comfortable. Heres the thing, I dont have a treadmill. I have a recumbent bike, and an elliptical. I feel confident the elliptical is too much, I get tired in the shower, but I feel that recumbent bike and treadmill seem comparable. The only possible problem I can see is with the legs going up and maybe pulling incisions, and I think that is a long shot. I want to start exercising. For reasons that may not make sense to you, I am a psycho, and have really big issues with walking outside, I live in the City and feel everyone is watching me and judging me while I exercise, so would REALLY prefer to do it in my home. I am scouring craigslist for a treadmill but havent found one yet. Anybody here use an exercise bike? What are your thoughts about use 10 days out?

I am no doctor but I cannot imagine the recumbent bike being harmful. I would think as long as you did not overdo it it would be fine. Just make it a comfortable position and not straining on your stomach at all.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
