when you stopped your PPI

Four years out and if I miss just one day of my Prilosec, I have miserable acid reflux. I think some of us are just destined to have a problem with it, but I consider that a small price to pay for all the benefits I have received from my sleeve.

I was prescribed prilosec for 30 days & often forgot to take it. I have only had 1 episode of heartburn, but I think it was because I laid down right after eating. Other than that - no issues.

I'm almost 4 mos out. Will be interesting to see if a problem develops later on.

UPDATE!

Hi everyone! It's now almost a week since I stopped my PPI , and I have to say that my symptoms have gotten better every day! So I'm hoping I'm like minkywinks (see above).

I do have to say that I went back to Protein shakes only for a couple of days and am sloooowly & cautiously working back to regular food. I am hoping the horrible heartburn was just a reaction to stopping the PPI so suddenly, although that's what dr said to do. I have a phone conference scheduled with my bariatric team tomorrow, so I will address it then. I will also ask if there is an OTC PPI that I could keep on hand to use as-neeeded. Will update & post what I am advised.

thanks again for everyone's input. I can always count on you guys! :D

My doctor prescribed Zantac post op for 6 months. It's not a PPI but a milder H-2 inhibitor (whatever that means). About PPI, I read somewhere that the stomach actually makes more acid producing sites in response to the PPI use to try and counteract the drug. So when you stop using it you have more acid than before. But with time your body will regulate again. I also read that you can alternate PPI and Zantac while weaning off a PPI.

I stopped mine somwhere around 4 months. I haven't had any issues with acid or heart burn. However, if I know I'm going to be drinking alcohol in a few days, I start taking some.

FINAL UPDATE

Well I spoke with my NUT and she seemed concerned, and advised me to call my surgeon right away. Called my surgeon's office and his assistant told me that he instructs her to tell all patients with similar experiences to try an OTC or get with my PCP to prescribe something. She didn't seem all that concerned.

Honestly, the acid problem has really improved the last couple of days, although it's not resolved and I am eating super cautiously. NUT pointed out that I shouldn't have to do that forever. So I will get an OTC and give that a go. If it doesn't help I will go to my PCP.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
