My surgeon has all his sleevers take nexium for 3 months after surgery, then stop. He told me that several times...take for 3 months, then never again. So, i took my last one on Wednesday. Friday afternoon the acid & heartburn started, until I vomited. Today during the day I did only Protein shakes but still battled the acid. For dinner I had about 1.5 oz of ground beef (that never gives me probs). 30 minutes later ....major heartburn until I threw up. I do have to say it amuses me to realize that for the rest of my life when I throw up it will be such a tiny amount :] it is less than when my cat has a hairball lol.

But ANYways....my question is this: is it common to have a temporary backlash from suddenly stopping the PPI, but it usually resolves itself? Or is this a possible sign that this will be a frequent battle? Anyone else's surgeon have them take the PPI for a set amount of time? When you stopped how did your body react? I wonder if it would make more sense to taper off the dosage and wean myself off rather than the shock of cold turkey.

If it continues, i will call the dr on Monday

I am a 3 year vet and I still take a daily PPI, when I don't take it I get a cold acidic sensation in the base of the throat that is very uncomfortable.

I am 9 months out and have tried on my own BTW to stop my PPI but when I do I have terrible acid reflux. I had to sign a paper before surgery that I would probably have acid reflux. Did not have it before. I will continue to try to stop periodically but at this point it looks like I may be on PPI rest of life.

Work with your primary care physician. Long term PPI must be managed, and likely you will want to augment with Calcium and Vit D...

Lot's of folks take PPI for a long time...

My surgeon gave me 2 month rx for PPI at time of discharge from hospital.

At 2 month f/u appt the PA wrote me for another month.

We had discussed it and she asked if I was having symtoms. I told her no, but I didn't have symptoms before surgery but didn't want to start having them.Then I had my PCP take over the rx for the future.

At my 3 month f/u the PA asked me if I needed a refill and I told her my PCP was going to do it. She was fine with that.

I plan on taking it for at least a few more months and then will see how it's going.

I never received a PPI and asked my doctor about it. He said he only prescribes if the person has acid reflex. I have not and haven't had issues. I am wondering why he doesn't prescribe when it seems the majority do?

My surgeon tried to take me off of my PPI right after surgery but I got terrible heartburn about a week later. Just a few days ago I let myself run out just to see if I still needed it, the heartburn was persistent and woke me up in the middle of the night for a few nights. I had to get it refilled and looks like I'll have to take it for the rest of my life. Small price to pay I think.

sorry you've had some vomitting issues related with the PPI

as OP, my surgeon prescibed prilosec - told me to contine taking - call if i were to have problems

i don't see any reason for me to stop the med

"if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

please don't experiment with lowering the dosage, tapering/weaning yourself off the PPI

speak to your doc about your vomitting issue, problems - thoughts of stopping the PPI

let him tell you what to do about your medical situation

doc is the professional, not us on the board

listen to your surgeon and nut before you listen to others

I had my surgery in Mexico. The Doctor there told me to take Omeprazole (40mg) for 6 months and then wean down to 20mg if tolerated. If I have issues to go back to th 40mg. 6 months after successfully being on 20mg I'm to try and see if I can do without it.

Thanks everyone for the input. I will definitely be calling the dr tomorrow. It sounds like from what everyone is saying that this may well be an issue that is here to stay. Since my surgeon tells everyone to stop the PPI after 3 months I am sure he has a certain percentage who call & say they experience this. He will know what to do. If I have to take medicine forever then so be it. That just gives me greater resolve to work hard to get to goal so that it will truly be worth it.

I have to remember to that besides this, I have had a super easy recovery and I am grateful for it. This is a small price to pay.

I was actually just speaking to my Dr about this... He said in his experience, people tend to have more problems with acid at about 6-12 months PO, then at about 15-18 months PO he begins to cut your dose of PPI in half to see if you can without it

I only had to take my PPI for about 4-6 weeks. I stopped once I ran out and I did feel like I had more acid but it eventually went back to normal. I don't like the thought of taking pills long term. I'm almost a year post op and haven't had any problems with acid but I do eat every 2-3 hours.

I was prescribed Pepcid for 6 months, I didn't have an issue pre-op with acid but omg it wakes me up at night now! I thought it was going to be a temp thing but I see now courtesy of this thread that'll be forever :-/

This is exactly what I get.

Four years out and if I miss just one day of my Prilosec, I have miserable acid reflux. I think some of us are just destined to have a problem with it, but I consider that a small price to pay for all the benefits I have received from my sleeve.
