Sticking to a pre opp diet

Recommended Posts

I meet with my nutritionist this week and I was wondering how others have stuck to a pre opp diet? I want to start changing habits now so I'm successful in the future. I at times eat when I'm not hungry and I am really scared that this behavior will continue after I'm sleeved if I don't find some way of beating it. I do very good thur the day until the evening and I feel like I'm constantly snacking on things. So what are some things you have done to stop eating everything in site?!?! My change this week was to have a fresh fruit bowel in the frig and veggies to snack on. I also left many things off my grocery list including pop! Please help!!!

I am also really worried about this. My WLS handbook suggest that I find other ways to combat boredom or deal with stress. I am an emotional eater as well as a person who eats when I get bored. I haven't even met with the surgeon yet but I am already trying to make changes to my habits so that I can be better prepared for whats to come. One thing I have been doing when I get bored and find myself looking to eat even when I'm not hungry, is I have been doing suduko and other puzzles. I picked up a couple from the store and when my mind goes there I busy it. I'm also thinking of taking up knitting. Also I find music helps calm me when I'm emotional and want to eat the hinges off the refrigerator. I also plan to use exercise in the future. My weight really restricts exercise but after WLS I hope that I can start. I hope this helps! :)

I'm the same guys I constantly 'graze' sometimes without even noticing that much. Apparently it's a lot easier to control hunger post op as the hunger hormone ghrelin is removed but I've found putting little memos on my fridge and cub board helpful and drink Water and wait 10 mins most of time time it goes away. But your completely right most of it is in our mind. Let me know how you go :) best of luck!

In the past 5 weeks I have given pop, coffee, fast food, full sugar Desserts, fried food and started exercising. It has been really hard! But the other posters are right it does get a little easier each day. I reduced things a little at a time and that seemed to work.

It still sucks sometimes!

For me it was the soda. I gave it up about a mth before preop. I new that was going to be the hardeat for me. I was addicted I never drank Water only soda. I actually went through withdrawal the sweats the mood swings. That was my wAke up call. I always told my family like any addict I can leave it whenever I want. Well no it wasn't easy it was the hardest thing to do. After that it was the drive thrus. Yup I said no more. This cannot control my life. I control my life. I'm 3 mth post op and I am living my life better and healthier than ever. And I don't miss a thing.

I am fine with pre op on the weekdays because I work and keep busy but on the weekend its really hard! The two days before my surgery is the weekend those two days on pure liquids are going to be so hard but I have to keep in mind the surgery will go so much easier and better if I follow the plan!! Good luck to all and follow those Dr's orders!! :D

I am almost 6 months post-op and 85lbs down. The pre-op diet was easy to get through for me. I dealt with my food issues and gave up unhealthy foods and started by cutting portions, not drinking with meals, and no snacking. The post-op was a bit of a challenge because of the the sweetness of the Protein Shakes and the cream Soups. My wife started to purée and strain homemade sop which was a welcome departure from the other items. The main thing was that I stuck to the program and DID NOT CHEAT on either phase. I know some are of the mindset that it's ok, just get back on track the next day, but the next day turns into the day after that. It's important to get in touch with your respective food relationships and deal with them accordingly. The surgery is a lifestyle change and is a tool to help fix your body, but does nothing for your mind. You must handle that part separately. Good luck to you all.

If you don't mid me asking, what does your diet consist of? Only shakes and veggies? Can you have unlimited anything? I know we all have different doctors and thus, different pre op diets. It hasn't been easy for ANYONE regardless :-) but I've tried my best to stay with it, even if it meant going to bed at 830 to beat the late night munchies.

I too eat out of boredom, especially at night while watching TV. Over the last few months I've simply (but not so easy) cut back and/or replaced the night time Snacks with a healthy alternative.

I am now starting my 4th day of my 2 week pre-op liquid diet. I've been battling the evening munchies with sugar free popsicles. They really help curve the head hunger for me.

Good Luck to you.

I was able to have a lot of success on my preop diet by keeping a food journal. Most people enter foods and calorie counts as they eat. But a better idea is for you to plan out your daily food intake and write it down and then stay on the plan. Many times people who are grazing through the day or impulsively eating don't have a daily plan

With regards to cheating, here's my take on it.......I didn't want to screw up this opportunity, so I didn't cheat....I will say on a couple of occasions, I reached for something, but pulled my hand back when I realized what I was doing......didn't realize how bad I had become at always looking for something.....I'm a grazer.....and an emotional eater.....it was my comfort, I ate when happy, sad, angry, bored......really, I didn't need an excuse LOL

If you are having trouble, do you know why you are cheating? Are you ready for this lifestyle change? Are you committed to it? Are you worried you won't be able to have a specific food post op?

Have you attended a support group? Often they are held at the hospital where bariatric surgery is done....they generally have a group that includes pre and post op patients---and you can ask them how they stayed on track for the pre-op diet. Are you working with a therapist? Perhaps a visit with one who specializes in obesity related issues can be of help.....your surgeon may even be able to suggest someone he's familiar with.

Next time your hand reaches for something, call a friend....go for a walk....read a book......put some music on and dance......do some laundry......just get out of the kitchen and get your mind on something else.....

following that strict pre op diet really helped me post-op.......I had my allotment of 3 shakes & 2 yogurts, and I was done for the day...it put a stop to always looking for something to eat, and so far it's made the first two stages post-op easier..................Sorry this is long......hope it helps.......

I had my first nutritionist appointment today. I start my diet tomorrow. I'm on a 1400 calorie diet and then 2 weeks before surgery I go on a liquid diet. I pretty much can eat whatever as long as I stay under 1400 calories but she want me to start to make healthier choices which I plan on doing. I don't plan on cheating either, if I'm gonna do this I'm gonna do it right! Good luck to you all:)

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
