Where should I start?

Recommended Posts

I have finally decided I need surgery. I am 5'7" and weigh 225. I have BCBS IL insurance. Where should I start? I have not discussed this with my Dr. Yet. She has treated me for a back injury since 2007 and even though weight loss surgery has not been discussed I believe she would not discourage it. Should I go to a Hospital/Clinic/Surgeon first? Or start with my regular Dr.? Has anyone had experience with BCBS IL?

I have not had experience with that insurance but definitely start with your physician. It doesn't hurt to look up local bariatric clinics, find out if they have informational seminars etc... But more than likely you'll need that referral from your PCP and by going to them first you are setting up a good start to the relationship and journey that they are going to be a huge part of. My physician was new to me, I actually was set up with her the first appt after referral. I saw her 6 times in 5 months and you know when I hit my surgeons weight loss goal, she hugged me, when I told her I was approved she told me how proud of me she was. It created a part of our physician-patient relationship that I've never had with another doctor.

I have Anthem Blue Cross and did not need a physicians referral for the seminar. It was very educational for me and I am continuing with the pre-op stuff now. You can always call your insurance, which I recommend for any major medical issue. Knowledge is Power!

I would start with your physician also. My doctor and I discussed WLS and referred me to a bariatric surgeon in my area. Even after I had my referral I researched the surgeon and read a lot of reviews to make sure he was a good one. This isn't something I would trust to just anyone.

I went to that first informational session and then discussed with it my physician before meeting with the surgeon. (the info session coincided just days before my physical)

Thank you all! I just scheduled with my Dr. office and sent my contact info to a couple clinics. I registered for the first available seminar..disappointed it isn't until Sept. 12th though.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
