I have told everyone that I'm doing this as it seemed easier than avoiding! I have had quite a bit of negativity! how I deal with it is to say "I have done my research and know 100% this is right for me". Speak with conviction and see how those doubters become quite. Some are only trying to look out for us and others have no idea what this op is all about. At the end of the day it's your decision and you have made for good reason :-)

I just didn't tell anyone cos I don't need a bunch of "helpful opinions" and "good advice" LOL. I just wouldn't argue with anyone about it, it's really no one's business but your own. You certainly don't owe them an explanation and you don't have to convince them about your rationale. If it were me in your situation, I would just nod and smile and change the subject asap. ;)

The people who are trying to stop you are uneducated about the sleeve and how it can improve your life.....They are also worried about the what ifs.....

Some are just scared you are going to look better then them.....oops...women for ya!

I only told a few people the real story about my surgery...others think I had a scar repaired on the lining of my stomach...Even seasoned nurses have swallowed that one..Can't believe it but it is true...

So they realize that my stomach must be smaller so I lost some weight....No one questions me about it at all..

I really did not lie, I just skipped the first part of this journey...

This is your life, your body, your future....You are in control...No one really knows what you have been through to get here......

It takes a lot of courage to come to this as it is not for the faint of heart...

Go get em girl!!!!!! :)

You can thank them for their opinion, but tell them you are making the best choice for you. If they continue to disagree or argue, say, "we'll agree to disagree on this matter and it is no longer open for discussion."

I'm very open about my surgery - even on Facebook (you know, where my "friends" are not necessarily all people I'm close to). I was lucky to be born with the gene that doesn't care what people think about me or my choices. Negative nellies can bite me, because this was MY choice. I did the research, I thoroughly thought this out, I got all of my questions answered, etc. - and I'm now 2 months out and doing well!

Essentially, those negative people can either find the exit door and excuse themselves from your life, or they can hold on to their own anxiety until they see you're doing fine. Either way, the biggest piece of advice I have is NOT to let them get to you! Who cares what other people think?!

I told my step mom and sister yesterday that I have been approved for the surgery. Surprisingly my sister did not say anything one way or the other, however, my step mom tried to talk me out of this again. My dad and step mom have tried everything from saying they are scared for me to trying to use a guilt trip on me. I finally told my step mom yesterday that I am doing this for me and this is something that I want to do. She got quiet but I could she is stil not in favor of the surgery. I have a very good friend that says the people in the small town where my dad lives are jealous of me and are afraid I will become skinny and healthy. I happen to agree with her.

A simple.. "yes, it sounds like you aren't comfortable with the risks/stigma of the surgery, I can certainly sympathize with that.. Good thing you don't need/aren't getting it then! Personally I've assessed the risks of surgery and done what I can to mitigate them and I'm unconcerned with what others will think of my personal health decision."

That's what I'm afraid of. I've only told my parents and twin sister and that's all I'm going to tell beforehand at least. I started with all the morbities// how shorter my life would be if I stay morbidly obese, the diseases I'll get, etc. I talked about the stats and explained the surgery fully. They're all "on board " but are all definitely nervous for me. I'm not going until January bc I want to educate them and myself more as well as get into a routine before surgery. A self imposed diet and exercise plan haha

It is amazing how everyone has an opinion on weight loss surgery. At the same time, a large portion of the population (that is not overweight) will look down on or ridicule those of us who are. It is one of the last acceptable forms of discrimination. I have been extremely fortunate in the fact that everyone I have told about this has been positive and supportive. ( except one person and she is a hateful person in general-lol) I have also shared with my Facebook friends, and I haven't had any negative responses yet. I am sure there are those who worry about it. But the people who know me know the struggles I have faced due to my weight. They all know losing the weight is my best option and if this is how it happens, well so be it. I am very educated on the sleeve and everything that it entails. The whole reason I joined this website was to get "insider information", to hear it from those who really know. Yes, there will be those who are against WLS for no really good reason. You will never be able to change their minds. At the same time do NOT allow them to change yours! If you know this is what is right for you, then follow your heart. It is your body and your life. And as I have said before...I wish all of us a healthy and happy future!

My parents tried to discourage it for the safety of my life they love me very much. But at my age they have no say. Well when my mom sees the changes in me when we visit on Sundays she will say you were so right this surgery was for you .. So from your step parents they will probably change their tune when you are ok from surgery with no complications. Take it with a grain of salt.

The more I think about this, the more I realize that the only people who can give you a valid and valuable opinion on WLS is someone who has had it. Everyone else just does not know. Period. They can list stats and media stories and horror stories all they want, but it is just stories that they have heard to support their position. But honestly, people who care about YOU and are true friends will understand this choice and support you no matter what. I mean... if you were to tell the same people you were going on a diet, would they tell you... no, no, no... don't do that... it is dangerous and not support you????? of course not. Surgery is just a medically altered diet.

My aunt tried to talk me out of it, she actually called me at work so my supporters (my husband and my mom) wouldn't hear her. I listened and then never discussed it with her again.

I decided that it was easier just to not talk to her about it until after I had the WLS. Funny thing is-- now she says it's the best decision I've ever made. Ha!!

Good Luck do what's best for you! It's YOUR body, it's YOUR health, and it's YOUR decision!

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
