5 months post-op with excruciating left side/shoulder pain. Please help!

Recommended Posts

My husband and I both had sleeve surgery in March. Both of us are experiencing terrible pain in our left side (stomach area) and in the left shoulder/collarbone area. The pain has got to be related to gas or something we have eaten. We just aren't sure if it is normal to be experiencing this at five months out? Please provide feedback if this is something you have experienced and if you have solutions for what has helped you alleviate and/or avoid having this terrible pain. We are begging for help! Thank you in advance.

Or kidney stones? I say that because typically the pain for gallbladder is right (but some do feel left side pain)

We are thinking our symptoms could be related to lettuce wraps we had on Sunday. The DH has only had the terrible pain (that comes and goes) but that got a lot worse AFTER he ran three miles this evening. My pain hit me at the end of the day today but I had other issues yesterday (diarrhea). This is scary to us because we haven't had these bad of pains since about two months out. Thank you for your responses to our strange situation!

I am 4 weeks out and have had occasional pain on my left shoulder in the morning while still in bed. Should I consider this as a symptom of a leak? Over all I feel good, sometimes a bit of discomfort while laying on my side.

Any thoughts?

I'm sorry to hear that but I woke up one day having pain in my shoulder and my right side. Also hurting when I breath. I was 5 weeks out. At first my dr. Office thought gas but it came out to be a blood clot and pneumonia. So be careful and good luck.

OMG - How did that happen? Was it related to the sleeve? Did you ever have pneumonia before? What did Dr. say?

Yep, it was from being sleeved. The Dr. at the ER. said that you can get a blood clot anytime after surgery if your obese and they said the pneumonia goes hand and hand with blood clots. I spent 2 days in the hospital then I was transported to a medical rehab place which I spent 7days in pain. I got release with the pneumonia still and having nurses coming to my house because the blood thinner meds I have to take to continue to dissolve the blood clot. Still in pain but can breath a whole a lot better than 10 days ago. So then experienced has not been good for me..... :(

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
