Help please, can't get protein, food intolerances

Recommended Posts

I'm in my 7th week post-op.

I recently discovered an intolerance to dairy (milk, whey, etc.) and eggs. My first 5 weeks of cottage cheese, yogurt, and whey Protein had me in a worsening dizzy brain fog. Once I gave that up, my brain and energy felt much better.

I can't really eat that much, so I'm not getting enough protein. Egg protein powders make me feel woozy, too. Soy protein concerns me (I'm a male and Soy can give me too much estrogen, so I've heard) and Brown Rice protein is plain ol' undrinkable.

shakes were my snack, I didn't have to give up drinking for an hour to have them, and they have me the protein my 6"1' frame needs.

I lost twice as much as usual this week (7.2 lbs.) and I'm worried I'm not getting enough calories or protein. I've also been exhausted the past 2 days.

What can I do?

Thank you.

Have you tried Protein powders in unsweetened almond or coconut milk? I'm a big fan of the chike protein iced coffee in the unsweetened almond milk.

The rice Protein? It tastes like gritty play-doh no matter what I do to it. It's a chore to get it down.

I can't have the other powders (see initial post).

If I could just eat steak all day if be fine, but alas...

I should specify more clearly...

whey Protein, egg Protein, and all milk products make me heavy-headed and dizzy to the point that I can't even be a passenger in a car.

Sorry I wasn't clearer.

Thanks!

I think it might be time to talk to your doctor and nutrionist. I would be in a world of hurt if I became lactose intollerant as I am allergic to soy. Are you eating any meat? Ground turkey, tuna? My nutritionist recommended peanut or almond butter as it is high Protein and calorie dense.

Good luck, I hope you find some food that sits well soon

This sounds like you may need to get to a nutritionist at this point to help you figure out what is going to work for you and not make you feel the way you have been feeling. They may have so other options for you so that you can get what you need and not feel bad.

Same here...exact same situation except mine won't stay down long enough to get in a car. Comes right back up. I would suggest you try a few bars.

Some can be high in carbs so really watch those. I've had luck with Atkins (Meal Replacement not the other ones) and CLIFF. Luna for a special treat (but they are women's bars so prob not your speed).

Thanks Catherine.

My NUT is away until next Monday; I sent her an email.

I eat meat, but 3 oz. 3 times a day isn't much.

If I were to snack in extra meat, that's another hour of no drinking per snack. That's where my challenge lies.

But wouldn't the bars have whey or casein for Protein?

Nope, both have soy. I know you don't want to do a lot of soy...I get that. But they don't have any dairy (whey or casein). There are many different types but those I can do and I can't do any dairy except very mild cheese is tiny amounts.

Edited to: cheese in tiny amounts.

Is it Whey Protein Isolate or just whey protein that makes you ill?

You should probably be trying to get your Protein from meats and fishes. If your not quite ready for dense Proteins yet I would recommend canned meats, like tuna, chicken, underwood roast beef spread. I used these to transition to eating regular meats. I believe it is healthier to get your protein from regular foods anyhow. Good Luck.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
