2 weeks out and tolerating everything...not getting particularly full either :(.

Recommended Posts

NOTE: I just noticed I wrote 2 weeks out. I meant 2nd week in. Sorry.

Okay this is the strangest thing. I was sleeved on the 25th last month and I only noticed the first 2 days of honest to God fullness, where I didn't want to eat or drink anything. That includes surgery day. I'm not having issues with eating to be honest. At the very very worst I notice something almost....just almost stuck in my throat for a minute if it's too dry but even that'll go down with a sip of Water. I'm not trying carbonated drinks, no veggies yet, haven't tried beef or turkey yet. Not gonna lie, I HAVE tried chicken in my Soup. It was tiny thin strips (thinner than pulled pork thin) and it was very very soft in the soup....but needless to say it went down exceptionally....wasn't too much either. Only about a tablespoon (in all, tiny tiny bits at a time though), didn't want to make a proper meal of it. I've tried fish...no problem. I've tried cheeses, non melted...skim mozzerella string cheese for example (low cal, low fat) not an issue. Actually....so far there is very little I haven't tried...and nothing is causing me any sort of discomfort whatsoever. I guess that's a great thing for some.....but it sort of defeats the purpose of the procedure.

Not to mention...I feel like a complete idiot staying on a full liquids diet trying to get my Protein out of these lousy Premier Protein shakes I'm gagging on (which happens to be the ONLY thing that hurts my tummy aside from getting punched in the gut), when I have tried and tested for days all of these much better and healthier ways to get in that protein. Chicken causes no issues for me, fish hasn't either. Milk, in all it's different forms (yogurt, cheeses hard, melted and soft etc) are not a problem. I've even tried Tomato Soups and cream of mushroom soup in the very first week....went down easy as can be. The only thing that is causing me a bit of trouble lately is this tiny little bite of seafood mayo salad type thing I just had...and that's because of this bit of underchewed celery that made it's way through by accident, if I chew like I should...no issues there either.

Basically...1. I think this sleeve is ridiculous. Because I can tolerate everything pretty much, and the fact that I don't get full off of the smallest amounts like I should and am still ravenous if I stop at just 1/4 cup or 2-3 oz (but I still stop myself, and pay for it later with added weakness and lightheadedness) is defeating the whole purpose!

2. 2 weeks out...and only barely 10lbs down. Honestly now...I've lost more eating primal on a regular stomach (meat, fish, poultry with veggies, high protein/high fat/0-50g carbs). And never starved on that.

3. What's the point of "not" eating proper healthy non-sugar laden, non gross, sources of protein like chicken, fish, eggs etc when I can easily digest it all. I've not had a single problem this whole 2 weeks. I despise drinking those Protein Shakes or powders....they're so ridiculously unnatural!!! It sickens me!

Sigh...yes, I did talk to my nut...got the pretty much pre-generated auto doctor response. Stay on the diet we set blah. Doesn't it just suck that the diet they set is actually making me weaker and hungrier...and lose less weight than I normally would and have on a protein(meat/foul/fish/eggs) diet. I digest it all well. UGH.

To end....I'll just say that yes of course I'm sticking with the diet they've set. Can't help that I've tried a few things here and there throughout the 2 weeks...but if I'd noticed even a slight bit of discomfort from any one of those things...the testing would not have even gotten this far! Thats the whole problem....is this just me....or does anyone else have a stomach of steel?

You don't want to feel full, you want to feel satisfied. Everyone loses weight at a different rate so you can not get upset because you have "only lost 10 lbs". That is 10lbs closer to your goal weight so you should be happy about. Your numbers will increase as your weeks go by. Just keep following the diet that the nutritionist put you on and stop trying new foods until they come up in your diet. Your surgeon wouldn't have put you on the diet if he thought your body could handle everything you are eating. Make sure you get all of your Protein in and your fluids and because that plays a big role in losing weight!

Your stomach is still numb and healing and it has no idea what you can and can't tolerate. You are at risk of a leak or infection in your staple line until 6+ weeks out. Why aren't you following your doctor's plan? Is it really worth the risk?

I know you're completely right. Both of ya! I think it's just these Protein drinks and powders. I avoid them like the plague because of the vomiting fest afterwards....and the acid-burning stomach ache type pain in my lower abdomen (where you can feel a bowel movement coming on) almost immediately after drinking them. They simply are not working for me. And after I vomit even once I get this horrible empty/pulling feeling in my stomach for a day or two which feels a lot like hunger....minus the ravenous growls of death. I am staying on the diet...it was just those few lapses I mentioned above. I plan to stick to the diet strictly though, no more tests and try outs etc. Sticking to full liquids for 3 more days. Than it's onto pureed foods. Meh, I'll blend me some chili when the time comes.

I guess it'll just be yogurt sweetened with xylitol now for me....3 more days. I'm NOT touching those Protein Drinks though...not in hell. I've got plenty of chicken Soup stored away....I'll make it up however I can. YUCK...hate that poison!

I had the surgery on the 29th and went through some rough reactions to the pain/non-vomit meds they gave me in the hospital. I had a drain in my side and still sore from the incisions on my stomach. The whole purpose of the surgery is to get healthy, change your mind frame on eating and your habits. I don't understand why you would want to push the envelope after MAJOR surgery. It's not like they pulled a tooth! I read somewhere that your stomach starts to heal 6-8 weeks AFTER surgery AND within that time frame if any type of leaking or problems arise it will do so during that time. I don't understand why anyone would want to take that risk. Just my two cents...

To be honest, it sounds like you expected this surgery to do all the work for you. Virtually everyone who has had the surgery and maintained long term weight loss will tell you that the sleeve is a tool, not the solution. You have to decide that you want to get rid of the weight once and for all by using the sleeve to your advantage in dieting. Every liquid and slider food out there is going to run through your sleeve and will not fill you up. Once you are on solid foods this will not be the case. I recommend patience, and work the program your dietician has put in place. Work it for months before you even evaluate the results.

So my doc didn't allow anything but Clear Liquids 2 weeks out then start full liquid week 3 which would be Protein Shakes. That is neither here nor there just surprised.

Many people find that they have new allergies all of a sudden so you may want to try some different Protein shakes. I am desperately allergic to whey though I have no prob with milk, cream, yogurt etc. I have the exact reaction you are talking about I know it is miserable! Try soy, hemp, pea protein. If you are buying online search for "vegan protein powder" and you will grantee to be whey free. Protein shakes are a great resource and I still have a few a week 3 years out. Super supplements in my area sells many vegan options in single serve packets so you can try.

If its the taste or texture try spending some time on "the world according to egg face" blog she has tons of shake recipes and has a gastric bypass so she knows how to cook for a tiny tummy. Also try Protein Shots they are 2-3oz. Of high protein clear liquid like thick kool-aid. They taste very strong but tolerable and you can often get 20g of protein off the vegan ones. Used to get them at rite aid and off Amazon.< /p>

I really recommend finding an option that will allow an all liquid diet for a least a week or two to finish healing and allow everything to settle out. Liquid diet is a tool you will likely want to utilize later for stalls and jump starts so figuring it out now will serve you well. Also make sure you aren't drinking with food. Supposedly to stop drinking half hour before meals and not start again till 30 min after. The liquid triggers the pyloric valve and allows Food to pass through the stomach quicker so you won't feel full. Dr. Alvarez has a great series on you tube that talks about these things you can search by name or search" Endobariatric" which is his practice.

Good luck!

Also if the texture is what's getting you try

Read the subject "Do lightweights lose slower?" I think that might be part of your problem also. You are reading about all of the great weight losses from heavier people that have a lot more to lose. You don't have that much to lose and I think that what you have done so far is fantastic. Keep it up, if you follow directions, it will work for you.

I personally did not feel full until I started eating dense Proteins, solid foods. As others have already said eating of solid foods early on can damage the suture line in your stomach and possibly cause a leak, which will be 100 times worse then any vomiting you have experienced so far. If you can't tolerate the shakes you are using try a different brand or try some of the Isopure premade Protein Drinks, it is very important to get your Protein in so your body can properly heal, odds are you won't get enough protein from what little amount of meat you eat and you are possibly damaging your stomach in the process even though you can't feel it yet. Good Luck.

Yes, I think I'll have to get those Protein shots. They're my only hope right now. I've tried loads of brands of Protein shakes and powders so far and they all make my stomach burn like hell!!! I can't handle that kind of pain....even the vomiting pains are easier. I think I'll Amazon a few brands to test them out.

Thanks everyone for the comments.

I haven't been getting full either, but I've read in another forum to up your Protein. I've been skimming by and barely getting my 70g a day and I knew I really needed to change this. I just ran out of my Protein Shots and so I've ventured into the unflavored Protein powder from GNC.

There are very few things I'm excited to drink. Tea is one of them. I tried mixing the Protein with my tea, but I thought it was disgusting, so now I'm trying to mix it with my version of the Starbucks bottled mocha frappes that you buy at a gas station.

Here's what I did.

1 Brew a cup and a half of regular coffee. You'll want it strong. I chose caffeinated, but Decaf works too.

2 Add a half a cup of sugar. I chose splenda! (Make sure to mix the splenda with a little Water or it will foam a lot!)

3 Add two tablespoons of hot cocoa mix. I chose the sugar free kind.

4 Mix in 1-3 cups of milk. It varies so much because it's based on preference. I like mine strong. I also used skim milk.

5 Chill your drink for an hour to two hours.

6 After you chill, you can add your desired amount of protein.

Maybe your Protein shake has too much sugar or carbs which don't agree with the sleeve? Which shake were you using?

You can't see what's going on inside your tummy. Don't just go by what you're feeling. You don't want to risk jeopardizing the integrity of your sleeve. It's still healing. Don't test it. This is no minor surgery. Follow your Dr's instructions to the letter. Frankly, Dr. Alvarez has his patient's on clear liquids for a week, then full liquids for 2 weeks before advancing to soft foods such as yogurt or pudding. I'm treating my little sleeve like a precious gift from Dr. Alvarez, with care and respect.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
