General Post-Op Conversation

Recommended Posts

Now that quite a few of us are sleeved (and more every day!), I thought it would be nice to have a space for general post-op discussion. Share experiences, troubles, questions...I know that now that I'm home for another 12 days, I'd love to have another thread to check obsessively. :-)

So how is everyone doing? I'm 5 days post-op and trying today with no meds. My biggest discomfort is the deep bruising around the big incision where they removed the stomach. But wow...I can't believe how quickly everything is getting better! I felt like ass on Friday after surgery...can't believe that was just a few days ago.

Walking is going well. I'm getting about 2.5 miles in, which I break into multiple shorter walks for comfort. I've gotten all my Water and Protein in so far. No vomiting. The bruises all over my body are fading quickly. I'm down 4.4 pounds since the morning of surgery, and I'd lost 14.2 during the pre-op week so it feels like I'm losing really fast. People have noticed and it feels good.

So who else wants to chime in?

My surgery was on the 4th. Sounds like you are doing great. I had my first sugar free Jello yesterday. Oh my gosh! It tastes like heaven! I'm in love! I went back to work on the 8th. I did have to keep getting up and walking and was tired, however it went ok. Now I feel great. My pain is gone and the swelling in my stomach is almost gone too

My surgery was on the 11th. I am feeling better than I expected to at this point. I am starting to get 48 oz of Water per day. I hope I will get to 62 eventually. I am walking 20 min per day per doctor's orders. I am still very tired and have to nap at least once during the day. I sleep well when I nap, especially if I lay down in my bed and not on the couch. Now if I could just keep the phone from ringing every time I lay down.

I was also sleeved on the 11th. I am back to work which makes everything really challenging due to my work environment. I tried walking at work instead of driving my scooter (golf cart) and let me tell you I almost passed out. (From the heat)

I have to find a better way to get my walking & Water in. Doing TERRIBLE on the Protein. Everything makes me gag. I had to hide my scale bc I was obsessively checking it ALL the time. Lol

I am feeling better & more hopeful everyday. I keep telling myself this is the LAST summer I will be fat!! :)

I was on the 15. Yesterday was the first day I could actually get down a full Protein Shake. I was also advanced to soft foods as tolerated. I still have pain around large incision and the bruising is almost gone, and honestly I feel pretty good! My goal today is to get in all my Protein and my water!!

I was sleeved on the 5th and have lost 15 pounds since surgery plus another 30 from the pre-op diet. I am feeling great, not having any problems with Water or Protein intake (besides being sick of shakes and sweet stuff). I am on a stage 3 puréed diet for another week before I can eat soft foods. I really miss chicken! My clothes are starting to hang off of me, can't wait to get out of the size 20's!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
