Can hiatal hernia prevent me from being sleeved

Recommended Posts

Good Morning Everyone,

I went in for my 1st nutritionist appointment yesterday. I had asked what the results were for my barium swallow test from the week before. She told me that their was no evidence of reflux but I do have a small hiatal hernia. She did state that she cannot diagnose and/or inform me of anything else about it. The thing that has me worried is that she stated that she has had patients that had to have the bypass instead of the sleeve because of a hiatal hernia.

I do not see the surgeon for another week. I really hope I don't have to have the bypass instead.

It is my understanding that I have a very small hernia. Is this typically something that can be repaired during surgery? Is it standard practice to not perform the sleeve for someone with a hiatal hernia?

Please send me feedback.

No I had one and my doc opt to wait to have it fix doing surgery he wanted me to lose weight first I considered doing both at the sane time was a dirty surgery .. 3 month after my sleeve my hernia got obstructed and I was throwing up bowels but I had the hernia for yrs never cause any problem I don't no if the weightloss contribute to the hernia getting obstructed. But I had emergency surgery April 19 Im well and doing great I just wished he would have done both surgeries at once ..

As said above, they'll fix it while you get the sleeve... quick and easy!

I had a fairly large hiatal hernia, and they fixed it during the sleeve surgery. I've never heard of anyone being told they couldn't get the sleeve because of a hernia.

Like others have said, most doctors repair hiatal hernias during surgery, so no worries!

I didn't even know I had one until the surgery. They fixed it then as well. It is like you get two surgery's for the price of one!

I had one too--didn't even know until I woke up and it was repaired. It shouldn't be a problem.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
