So glad you are doing fine. Keep it up! Don't want to get into doctor and facility bashing but I would never go there again! We advise friends and advocates to look elsewhere. My husbands surgery was there and three years and a corrective surgery later... hes doing pretty good.. From multiple patient infections, two deaths, one patient rushed to the border by cab and left there, doctors using other doctors credentials, a recovery house that was a party house for coordinators, almost no English, so many complications and that is while we were both there. I could go on and on but it was a horror story. I always felt bad for the ELEVENTH patient of the day! Oh and an OR that was never and I mean never cleaned between operations. And today a OR assistant that was the chauffeur three years ago. Told you I could keep going. I am VERY happy for all the patients that are doing well.

Thought I should edit this and say it was Dr. Almanza at Jerusalem Clinic 3 years ago, not what my original thread was about.

I hope all goes well. Kelly is great. MBC is just abit shady IMO. Too many bait and switches. What I don't understand is why wouldn't you book directly at the same price and get the better package that Doc Kelly gives you. Both packages are NOT the same! Anyways... good luck on your upcoming surgery.

Unfortunatly, Dr. Kelly was an additional $800.00. I had read a ton of information and even though I don't get to have Dr. Kelly, I am very comfortable with the decision I made. i konw there are many very qualified and good doctors to choose from. Honestly, if I could have afforded it, I would have gone with Alvarez. I have a friend who went to him and she has done very well. We all have to do the research and then make the choice that works best for us. Thank you westcoastlady for your concern. I am very excited to get this journey started and very happy my local Dr. is on board to do the aftercare. I am so happy for all of you who post, so that we can all be better informed. Have a great day.

Incredibly interesting post and thank you so much for all that information. I have to say, the sooner Dr. Kelly extricates himself from any association with MBC the better. AND whilst on my little rant, they are using his name in their website. I'm no attorney but I believe it would serve him well to get one who can take his name back.

I had my surgery with Dr. Kelly on June 25th. Top notch doctor and facilities. Booked directly with Lora, his assistant. I cannot recommend Dr. Kelly enough....you will be very pleased from start to finish! Good luck!

The good' date=' the bad & the ugly... Mexico Bariatric Center, Dr. Kelly, Mi hospital

I have written this for information purposes only. I am trying to be as informative as possible to anyone that is considering surgery with Dr. R. Kelly, or using Mexico Bariatric Center or considering Mi Doctor Hospital. We just got back a few days ago from TJ… so far so good! My wife is doing GREAT! I hope this is not found as advertising as per the Forum Rules.

I accompanied my wife for VSG surgery; I had mine three years ago. My surgery was with Dr. Almanza and that is a complete other topic. Someday I will write about that gong show.

THE GOOD

Airport pick up in San Diego by a MBC employee was on time as scheduled. AAAAA

Dropped off at the Marriot... not my first choice but very acceptable.

Originally booked into the Grand but was changed by MBC the week prior. Been at the Grand several other times and prefer it over the Marriot because of its location, dining and facilities. All was ok because MBC did advise us prior to leaving for Tijuana. AAAA

Mi hospital was good. There is no Doctor present in the evenings till early morning. Very clean for Mexico standards. AAA

Opted to have the leak test and x-rays at Angeles Hospital due to the fact of their more advanced equipment. A Hospital that most definately meets all standards. An extra cost of 60. AAAAA

Dr. Kelly and his assistant Lora were both great. Very caring, conversations were very informative, professional and there is no sugar coating and no bull ****. We really appreciated that they both personally checked in with my wife during her recovery at the hotel. It was nice to see him & Lora other than just a nurse or coordinator. Not sure if he was supposed to do that since we booked through MBC. AAAAA

MBC was caught in a lie about changing Doctors to another patient and Dr. Kelly was caught in the middle. To keep the patient happy and to keep the patient from feeling they were used in a “bait & switch tactic” Dr. Kelly performed the surgery at no charge and picked up all Hospital charges as well. I witnessed this as this patient was in the room next to ours. AAAAA

THE BAD

Originally booked with a coordinator named Kelly. After our second communication with her she advised that she had a family issue with her dad and that Cindy would be able to assist us from there. Half a dozen emails, 3 or 4 phone calls. All was good at that time. I would rate her and the service a AAAA BUT… after us having problems with the hospital change, Cindy understood why were upset but changed her tune after speaking with a higher up at MBC. I did not take her comments lightly when she said it’s about time Dr. Kelly took responsibility and admit to his errors in regards to the hospital change. She also advised us that she did not make any money on this booking and we brought up this issue with Daniel (Mexican liaison for MBC) that we didn’t feel it was right for Cindy not to be paid as she did all the work as far as we could see but I truly don’t care how MBC pays its employees and Cindy had no business telling us that. We feel she did her job and should have been paid by her employer no matter what differences we might have had with her! This is business… not personal. AA

As far as blaming it on Dr. Kelly, he personally told us why we had the hospital change… that will be in detail in “the ugly”.

The Marriot's room service was poor. AA

My wife wanted to be one of the first surgeries of the day and was advised by Cindy that she had to arrange that with Daniel once she was in TJ. She spoke to Daniel’s assistant, Tatianna at the Hotel the minute we arrived and she said she would look into it and call me back. No callback came and Daniel said he knew nothing of this, and surgeries were already booked. Very poor communications between Cindy, Tatianna and Daniel on this matter. A

THE UGLY

Taken to MI Doctor Hospital. We booked our surgeon to operate in the Florence/Oasis Hospital. We were never advised by MBC that there had been a change. We found this unacceptable. Tatriana & Cindy advised us the morning of the surgery that Dr. Kelly no longer had privileges there and he only had privileges at MI Doctor (thus the change). After meeting with the doc an hour prior to surgery he and his assistant advised they also had privileges at Nova Hospital & Angeles Hospital. MBC states the Dr. changed the Hospital on us and the doc says MBC would not pay the higher operating room fee. Any way you look at it, we booked through MBC and they were the ones that should have advised us. Then it would have been our option to cancel or book directly with Dr. Kelly’s service directly. We would have cancelled and booked directly with Dr. Kelly! Our package cost was also higher than others MBC offers and were told that part of the reason for the higher cost was having the surgery at the Florence/Oasis which was a nicer facility (according to Cindy). No partial refund/offer of extra services was offered to compensate the difference in price between the two facilities. A

We were also advised by an onsite MBC employee that Dr. Kelly was not set up to operate out of Nova Hospital as of yet, but Dr. Kelly's assistant showed us his schedule and that he has worked out of Nova Hospital for the last 13 days. I detest blatant lies. A

Fees at MI are 400 dollars cheaper than Florence/Oasis and Nova is a few hundred more than Florence/Oasis. If you book directly with Dr. Kelly ... Nova Hospital and all its benefits are included at the same price. More on that in my summary.

The website that we booked through was www.ramoskellymd.com It states that it is the “Official Patient Coordinator Website of Dr. Ramos Kelly”. IT IS NOT! Dr. Kelly’s website is www.wlsclinic.com There are differences. See my summary. A

SUMMARY

I suggest anyone that is considering surgery with Dr. Kelly should book directly through his website at www.wlsclinic.com or call Lora at 619.793.4869 or email at Wlsclinic@outlook.com. There are many differences with the package sold through Mexico Bariatric Centre and sold directly. They both charge the same price but when booking direct, surgery is performed at Nova Hospital. I had a chance to inspect this facility. It is state of the art, high tech and has Doctors present 24/7 in case of any problems that might occur. Not just nurses and a doctor on call. Another difference is the leak test x-ray. He takes you to Angeles Hospital where again… state of the art equipment and images. He has a nutritionist meet with you while still in the hospital… the list goes on and on. Please do your research on this!

There are many Bariatric Surgeons in Tijuana. Some excellent… some very poor. The same applies to Hospitals and Hotels. Being that this was my 10th visit to TJ, I feel abit qualified to speak on this subject. I have assisted many friends while having VSG surgery and so far… I am the only one with a few minor complications. They are not major but just little hiccups along the way.

I have lost over 120 pounds and feel great. Wish I knew of this surgery years before I actually did it. If anyone wants to get the real scoop you can call me at 250.675.4657 anytime. I’m on the west coast so please remember the time difference.

I’m not a coordinator; I do not get referral fees… I’m just a happy, lighter individual that wishes you the very best with whatever decision you make.

And I cannot sign off without stating one opinion.

I do not want to debate this statement (and won’t) but if you are considering having surgery at Jerusalem Clinic with Dr. Almanza and Dr? (Mr.) Bentacourt… please reconsider. Research the facility, Betancourt and the recovery house and its personnel.

Thank you for reading my comments. They are just my comments and do not reflect others. I know many of you have had surgery with other surgeons and facilities and love your doctors but I wrote this to help others while in the decision process. If after having surgery you feel that you had the best care then I suggest you start your own Topic.

George

I had surgery with Dr Valenzuela in Feb. of this year and I am down almost 70 lbs already!!! Christy was wonderful to me and my daughter!! Remember people that weight loss surgery is a business and unfortunately there is a negative side to it with the competition. The doctors and patient coordinators were outstanding and I would do it again in a second. There was never any "bait and switch" with George, Dr. Kelly was excused from florence because he threatened to hit one of the employees there, and he should accept responsibility for what he did, he changed the hospital , not MBC because he LOST SURGERY RIGHTS AT FLORENCE, so get it straight and lets stay professional George. I am glad that you are both doing well, and investigate to find out the truth instead of posting something that is not true. MBC was outstanding to me and my daughter and to 4 of our friends that we have sent to TJ for surgery. No "ghost surgeons" no BS right up front, great service and very happy with the results!!! I had surgery with my Mom thru MBC and I am a BSN, I am posting on her account .So I researched the company and facility thoroughly, I am very satisfied with all of the services I received from MBC, all of the doctors and coordinators far exceeded my expectations and went out of their way to make sure we were well taken care of while we were in Mexico, I always felt that we had a safety net around us!! I am not a coordinator or an employee of MBC, I just want people to know the truth , that they can get a great, safe surgery in a good and clean environment and I highly recommend MBC to any one thinking about bariatric surgery,. I have sent 4 of my friends from the hospital I work at and they have all had very great experiences also with MBC and Dr. Valenzuela!! Thank you, Katie BSN

Lol, I am brand new to posting on this site. I am scheduled for surgery with Dr.Kelly on Sept. 3rd 2013. I inadvertantly, reposted something Westcoast Lady/ her husband Gerorge posted because I was trying to copy and paste it, and message it to myself, because I was planning to call them and ask some questions. That's what they offered out to people on this forum/ in that post but have since been banned for some reason.

I too considered Dr. Valenzuela/ Cabrerra team, but decided to pay a bit more for Dr. Kelly, because I heard that he also visits patients at the hotel, and I want the extra bit of aftercare, since I've had post op infection from other surgery and it freaks me out.

Dr Kelly is amazing. I'm also a nurse Katie, and you should know how important experience is. MBC does nothing but try to bait unsuspecting patients away from more experienced surgeons and to push them onto the tables of cheaper, less experienced Drs.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
