Average cost for self-pay

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

My daughter's insurance company doesn't cover WLS. I'm just wondering what the range of cost for the sleeve is if you're self-pay. If you know the average for all-in, surgeon, hospital, anesthesiologist that would be great. I know it will vary widely, but we're just trying to get an idea of what to expect. She's not interested in traveling out of country. Thanks!

When I was researching, the cheapest I could find stateside was $9,800 in Lousiana, Nevada and Texas. I wound up going to Mexico instead for $4500.. I figured if I was going to have to travel to get the surgery I'd miss out on the follow-up care/group meetings etc anyway, so why not just go a mile over the border and save 5K. If I stayed local in PA, it was $20,000.

Although Insurance paid for my Sleeve, my doctor's private pay was $14,000.00 in Alabama. This covered anasthesia, all doctor's visits, the surgery, and the hospital stay. Best wishes!!

In the US, I'd say $10,000-$20,000 is average. I have a bunch of self-pay prices listed on my blog (the link is in my signature)

I got a quote, where I live in Denver, CO, and it was $17,500 for self pay. I couldn't possibly justify that. Even though I had other options to help pay it. I chose MX for $4,700. She should really look into it.

Dr. Mark Pleatman, great surgeon located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan charges $11,200 which includes a two-year follow up. He's fantastic!!!

I paid $12,200 all inclusive in Dallas, TX. Included pre op testing, all the hospital costs, Dr's fees and two nights in the hospital. I only need one though. Also includes follow ups. Lots of top surgeons in this area, I guess Texans are a fat bunch.

I'm in CO, our hospital has a self pay that runs $13,000 for outpatient lap band. It doesn't list a price for the sleeve but with a hospital stay and difference in surgery I would guess high teens into $20,000 range.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
