Just found out 5 days after my surgery my uncle is throwing my grandma an 85th birthday party and I'm questioning if I will be ready for something like that so soon physically wise and if anyone has had this happen and how they got through it and handled it?

A lot of people react differently to the surgery. I know that I was nowhere near ready to use the bathroom or even sleep comfortably let alone go to a party. Take it a day at a time :-)

Some seem to be fine, but I'm 2 weeks post op and I was not up for that at 5 days. I'm just now getting my energy back :(

Hiya, just mho...u've already made a huge step towards helping yourself. So if the family knows you've just had surgery, then they will understand if ur not up to it. Otoh, she's turning 85, w that said, if n only if possible, make an appearance to tell granny hb, then leave and continue recovering. Good luck n happy 85th to ur grandma:))

I had surgery 11/28/2012. Does it say holiday party time? I opted out of everything involving restaurants, parties revolving around food. So by the time Xmas eve came I was so glad to be able to be with my family and eat a little something. I was not feeling well enough to watch others eat everything I couldn't. I did attend my granddaughters birthday at Cracker Barrel on Dec 4. This was really hard for me just sipping ice Water but I was not able to eat anyway. By the way everyone ate all the good things I love without a thought of how I must feel.

One party is possible especially if it is not revoled around food. Best of luck.

I would say to just make an appearance. Today is my 5th day since surgery and I made a quick trip to GNC, then drove for about an hour and a half... And planning on going to the store later. Just do what you feel like you can! Btw... Haven't had pain meds since yesterday morning so driving was ok :)

Like was said every body reacts differently. I was fine the minute I woke up. I vacationed as if I hadn't had surgery. I followed drs orders about lifting and getting some rest, but I had a blast on my 3 weeks off! Everyone is different so you'll have to wait and see

I had my surgery on a Tuesday and was discharged the next day. I stayed with my parents during recovery and planned to go back home on Saturday, but I just wasn't feeling up to it yet - still having nausea and feeling weak. I did not go home until the following Monday, almost a week later, and even then I still had some hiccups. I am now 2 1/2 weeks post op and I feel great. I agree with other people who have responded that it just depends on your body. My recovery took longer than I had wanted to, so for me, going to a party five days post-op would not have been in the cards for me.

You'll likely be fine to just sit around and visiting for a few hours Just get plenty of rest beforehand.

I guess everybody does react differently. I'm 3 days post op and I feel fine. The people at the hospital were surprised as to how great I've been doing. I am actually complaining that I have to be off 2 weeks from work, when I was planning on being back next week. But anyways, wait until your surgery and take it one day at a time.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
