discouraged and depressed

Recommended Posts

I am 3 weeks post op and I've only lost 20 pounds. All the sudden at 3 weeks the weight loss stopped. I am drinking my Protein and not eating anything that contains fat. I have lost 2 dress sizes but it just seems like I should still be loosing at least a pound per day like I was. I did this surgery so I could get back in the corporate world and to be attractive again to my husband. Am I doing something wrong? If anybody has any feedback please let me know what I can do to go back to loosing the weight. I just want to feel normal and beautiful again. But i must be doing something wrong. Dr says I can't go back to the gym for 5 more weeks so I'm just walking. Any advice anyone?

It's the 3 week stall....do a search for it on the forum, and you'll find it's quite common.

Just keep doing what you're doing and it'll work. Some people lose 50 pounds their first month. Some of us lose "only" 20. Many people stall around week 3. I did for about 10 days and just lost 4 pounds finally again this week (I'm 4 weeks out). Be patient and keep doing what you're doing. It took years to get where we are today. It'll take several months or maybe a couple of years to get where we want to be.

A pound a day is a 3500 calorie per day deficit.. it is not reasonable to have that huge of a deficit every day even with the surgery. Also, your body will plateau for a while.. My weight loss stalled for an entire month right after surgery. I wasn't doing anything wrong, that's just the way it goes.

I am happy to lose 10 pounds a month.. A 15 pound loss in a month is absolutely THRILLING. I think you need to adjust your expectations a bit. You'll lose the weight, it just may not come off at a rate of 30 pounds a month.

Thank you all for your responses. I appreciate it. I've read all these story's and watched a bunch of you tube videos where these women lost 100 lbs in 6 months. So I guess I expected the same thing.

100lbs in 6 months i doable but you have to take in account of how much the weighed before hand. Someone who weighs 400lbs is going to loss more weight in a short amount of time compared to someone who ways 300lbs.

20lbs in the first 3 weeks is very good. Keep it up.

Hi there.

I'm exactly five weeks post-op today yaaay! I had a very difficult 2-3 weeks healing process but at 4 weeks I started to feel much better and now I feel pretty good. Im 5'2" and started my journey at 248 lbs on April 1st. I lost 10 lbs during the pre-op diet period and I was sleeved on May 1st. By June 1st I had lost 11 more lbs. I have lost a total of 21 lbs in two months. I can't say I'm not disappointed especially reading how so many people are losing so so so much faster :-( I try to remain positive and keep in mind that I'm losing and not gaining! Unfortunately Ive also become hungry..not head hunger which I was prepared for tnx to this forum..but real hunger! I can also eat quite a lot..a lot more than I expected or wanted in fact =-O I haven't tried to push the limit and get as full as I can. I'm consuming about 1000 calories a day and not reaching the Water or Protein goal :-( I follow the protein first, no water 15 mins before and 30 mins after rules. I'm still figuring it out I guess.

I also watched a BUNCH of YouTube videos and read a LOT of posts in this forum and started to get really discouraged. Fortunately a really positive person will point out just when the years start that..hey! 21 pounds lost in two months is great lol!! Keep as positive as you can :-)

You may want to look at the things you are eating. I am 10 weeks out now and I feel like I eat more than most people do, and I am not eating 1000 cal per day. I get in 80-100+ gm of protein in most days and I eat really low carbs (I try to keep it between 20-30 gm per day but preferably closer to 20 gm). If you are able to get that many calories in but not all of your protein I'm going to guess that you are eating more carbs/fats than you need at this point. Keep working at it, it certainly is a learing process and I am still learing everyday. You are doing great though with your weight loss.

I too had a stall but mine started at 10 days out and lasted 2 1/2 weeks. Talk about drive a girl crazy! I totally know how you feel, I felt the same way and I'm sure most of us here have had the same thoughts and feelings. If you are doing what you know you should keep that up but maybe try to change it up a little. I know that when my stall started it was about the time that I was on full liquids/soft foods. I was getting in way more carbs than protein. My doc wouldn't let me start on protein until after two weeks out. Anyway, when I was able to dramatically drop my carbs and really pick up my protein my stall broke. I have had once since then too and I think I'm probably starting another one now. The key is to keep chugging along. This will work. 21 pounds is a great loss, more than I lost in my first month and I have WAY more weight to lose than you do :). One other thing, try not to weigh yourself everyday. (I really suck at this part, even in a stall I weigh everyday cause I want to know when it breaks). But I have figured out that when I get on the scale and don't see it moving even when I know I'm doing everything right, I get discouraged. If I can stay away from the scale and I know that I am doing what I am supposed to then in my mind I know it is working and that makes me feel really good. I hope it will you too.

When I went through my first stall my body really changed a lot even though the scale didn't. I dropped a pant size almost overnight it seemed like. And people noticed more just all of a sudden. You should measure yourself every so often so you can see how much your measurements are changing even if the scale is being stubborn. Also look for NSV's to keep your spirits up. There is way more to this journey than just what the scale tells you. Keep your head up, you've got this. I'm sure your husband thinks you are one beautiful lady, and even though what he thinks of you is important, you need to BELIEVE you are beautiful even more! Sorry, I think I'm rambling...

You are feeling exactly like I am. I was sleeved on April 29th and in the first 2 weeks I lost 18 lbs. At five weeks out I have lost 8 more for a total of 26 lbs. I wanted 30 gone by this time. I am eating 600-700 calories per day, and usually get all protien and Water in. I started walking for 30 min a day as soon as my drain was pulled, and was up to 2.3 mi in 30 minutes yesterday (I'm so out of shape so I am proud of that). I just don't understand how with the exercise and such little calories the scale isn' t moving anymore.

It's your body reacting to the shock from surgery. I think most of went through the dreaded 3 week stall. Just keep doing what you are doing and it will break. I too was discouraged with a 20lb loss at 3 weeks, but it broke and at 14 weeks I am 70 lbs down. Hang in there it only gets better. Congrats on your weight loss and journey.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
