How long did it take to get the pre op stuff done?

Recommended Posts

How long did it take you folks before you got a date set? Not counting arbitrary delays like 3 years or 6 month diets. Start to finish including first meeting surgeon to finishing screening tests. Just trying to see what the typical amount of time it takes.

might depend on your insurance... I am on medicare... so I had to go thru a minimum of 6 months worth of nutrition classes ( 1 class a month ) some insurances only require 3 classes. It also depends on what you have to do for the bariatric surgeon as far as clearances go, which means going to other Dr's..having to schedule appts. I was required to get clearance from my primary, a cardiac, and a pulmonologist.. all of those required some time to make and GET the appt.. Either way..the sooner you start.. the sooner its here :)

4 months. I was required to complete 3 months of medical weight management. So I had plenty of time to get all of my pre-op tests completed. I finished all of those tests within one month. I heard back from my insurance within 2 weeks. I had to complete all the pre-op requirements before my case was submitted for approval. Overall, it wasn't bad; it gave me time to really make sure this is what I wanted to do.

I could have had mine in 2 weeks after meeting the surgeon but I needed to wait on my vacation so it was a month and 6 days.

Mine was a little over a month - I met with the surgeon on May 2nd and finished all of my Pre-op clearances (blood work, H. Pylori test, NUT consult, letter from my primary doc station my weight loss attempts and joined a bariatric resource program my employer required) by May 10th - it was submitted to insurance that day. I had my sleep study to rule out sleep apnea on May 15th while waiting to hear from insurance. Insurance approved the surgery on May 20th - they scheduled my surgery on May 23rd for tomorrow, June 5th and I started my all liquid Pre-op diet on Sunday, May 26th. I did all of my Pre-admission testing etc last Wednesday the 29th - bloodwork, respiratory consult, X-rays, ultrasound, EKG, another NUT consult and meeting with medical doctor who cleared me for surgery (about a 3.5 hour appt). And here I am now - surgery tomorrow (I need to be there at 12:15 and surgery is scheduled for 1:45). I was very lucky though that I didn't have to do any other supervised diets or NUT consults...

Mine has taken 8 months. I did my informational seminar in October 2012 and my surgery is scheduled for June 28.

I had to do seminar, meet with surgeon, 6 months of nutritionist, psych eval, barium swallow, labs, and an EKG.

Thanks for all the responses! My insurer says I qualify and am 100% covered. Seminar with their approved doc tomorrow, hope to get it all wrapped up by July, from the responses so far it sounds feasible.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
