May sleevers! How much have you lost so far?

Recommended Posts

wow...everyone is doing great from the last several posts...bravo! :) the weight loss has been very slow for me...it didn't help that I was on a cruise all last week and was off my plan...I gained about 3 pounds but was bloated so I think there was some Water weight...I am down one of those pounds since I've been back....I am right at about 50 pounds in a little over 5 months...I am not totally pleased but I am accepting where I am at...I am not going to give up!

on a different note: a question for my fellow May sleevers--have you experienced noticeable hair loss? how bad and when did it start and/or end in the process? about a month ago, it started for me and has been worse the last couple of weeks...I had thought I had "escaped" it once I was past 4 months but apparently not

Sleeved on may 20, 2013 and SW was 271 and now I've been bouncing from 206-210 bc of low caloric intake. Hopefully by upping my Protein and calories will help me start losing again.

I had surgery may 8th, and I have lost 63 pounds. I am now a healthy BMI, and only 8 pounds from goal. I was a lap band revision.

Hi tigerbelle! Congratulations on your WL so far. I'm a slow loser too. I've lost 44lbs since may 7.

I too, thought I'd escaped the Hair loss but late sept my hair started breaking and splitting and is now falling out A Lot! Everyone says it grows back but I already have extremely fine thin hair and you can see my scalp easily now. I'm not happy about it but there's not too much I can do about it.

hi, K8ee...of course, I don't wish Hair loss on anyone, but at least the two of us know we aren't alone in this...your experience sounds almost just like mine...I hope both of us get at least some of our hair loss back!

hi Tigerbelle! Glad to hear you are well. On hair loss: yes, I began losing drastically last month. While being thinner is a boost, my scalp showing is a bummer and makes me look and feel older. Certainly worth it, but still disheartening. My friend recommended "Toppik Hair Fibers" available at Sally Beauty online and in store. I haven't yet tried it but am def going to. It is pricey but really works according to my friend and her hair stylist. If you try it, please let me know your thoughts.

Reading about all this hair loss for others makes me feel a little bit better i think ? ;-) I thought i had escaped it also and at 4 months on the nose i think it started really coming out - by 5 months i was getting handfuls when i showered!! Freaked me out so bad i got it cut to a shoulder length from mid back thinking it would be "less weight" on my head blah blah lol it still is coming out but as slowed down a little bit i think. I started taking Biotin and my hairdresser said to be really sure i was getting my Iron levels checked and where they should be. She has seen a lot of women for many reasons losing hair and often it came down to Iron levels as well? Interesting and worth a try anyway.

I'm really happy with this weight loss but freaked out about the Hair loss and also this big stall i am in!! I got to 159 then actually gained??? a couple of pounds back to 161. I watch every thing i put in my mouth on my fitness pal and use a fitbit to monitor exercise etc... Until now i had never actually gained a lb - maybe got stuck but gaining 2 lbs is really not fun. Makes me think of all the times i dieted lost big then gained it all back again.... I thought maybe i was not getting enough calories in? i was averaging 800 net calories of 600 with walking everyday and Protein at about 60 to 70 gms a day. The last 4 days i have tried to bump calories up to 1000 and my Protein to 80gms. It feels very scary to bump up my calories and i worry i will gain even more??

Does anyone have advice or thoughts on calories for 5 to 6 months out? What should we be eating to keep the weight loss going?? I knew it would slow as i got closer to goal - but hoping i'm just not done?? I am 24 lbs from goal :-( help.....

Down 80 pounds since my 2 week pre op diet SD may 23rd, I have alot of hair so when it started falling out I wasn't worried, however I was tired of cleaning it up so I chopped it all off. From mid back to pixie cut. I really like the new do and really feel and look like a new person. It is still falling out but not as much hopefully with the frequent cutting it will slow down.

Hello. Wow congrats to all of you on your successful weight loss. I am currently about a week away from 6 months post op. I am down 62 lbs from starting weight. I am a little sad its not more but I'll take 62 pounds less anyday. I am however struggling with the Hair loss. That hair of mine has been falling out drastically for the past 3 1/2 months. To the point were I have to wear hair extensions. :( Has anyone found a good solution (vitamins, hair products, ect.) for this problem? Please help.

SleevePrincess13 and others who are suffering with hair loss: I am too! So discouraging. I have found two things that help but nothing will cure it until we stabilize.

1. "Follicure" Shampoo and conditioner used when you wash hair. But reduce the frequency of washing and use a dry shampoo in between.

2. Once hair has dried (an subsequent days) use "Toppik" to reduce the appearance of thinning. It is colored keratin Protein fibers. I have been very happy with this product, but look forward to not needing it. It is a bit pricey, but worth it. You can get it from Amazon or Sally Beauty.

SD 5/23 and I'm down 90 pounds today. My hair started falling out in September and the only thing that has worked to slow it down for me was cutting it off. Hormones seem to play the biggest role in when it will start a massive spiral of coming out (I'm on the Depo shot and when I get close to the next shot it starts falling out badly). I'm just taking it as it comes because there's not much else that seems to help. I fit into a size 14 the other day in jeans so I'm pretty happy overall. I may not have hair but I'm starting to get a rocking body.

Same starting weight and basically stuck at same current weight. But you look much slimmer than I do. Mind if I ask what height you are and what size you're in? I just wonder if my mind is playing games with me?

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
