How did you decide what WLS to have?

Recommended Posts

I went with the band because I was naive and didn't research it. I was ricidulous and I should have realized it was not a good option when two cordinators I went with had revised from band to sleeve. How stupid could I be? Dying twice convinced me that the band is not a safe option to consider for most people.

RESEARCH. Go to the lapband forum and search complications. It's outrageous that the band hasn't been recalled.

DIED? TWICE? What....?!

My choice was easy. My back was killing me, pcp put a big red OBESE on my chart and I got mad, get a referral to see what's out there, surgeon says " you need sleeve" I said, how skill are you in it, he proudly said" I think of myself as the best" my reply: where do I sign up! 6 weeks later, sleeved and happy. Went back to see him, he didn't even know that was me and end up flirting with him before my appt time. 21 months later, best decision ever.

I have been debating on WLS for over 10 yrs , at first I wanted gastric bypass then about a month after I started working with a clinic a friend of my friends died from complications and I felt it was a sign and decided to do the surgery. Then after I had my kids I was considering lap band and went into my first appt wanting that . Then I attended my seminar and just felt really uneasy about lap band an heard about the sleeve and knew it was the right choice for me! I prefer the sleeve because it is taking away the hormone ghrelin which causes you to crave food and the fact that it doesn't cause Vitamin deficiency.

I started researching 2 - 3 years ago and first looked into the band, but soon realized (after my first seminar) that VSG made much more sense for me, and that was even before all the news has come out about poor long term outcomes for the band. My reasons for the sleeve:

  1. No malabsorption or dumping like bypass
  2. Better outcomes than lap band
  3. No foreign objects like lap band
  4. No continual visits for filling the band
  5. Sleeve removes most of your ghrelin (hunger hormone) areas of your stomach, making long term success much more attainable (some hunger does come back I understand)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
